ABC Boss: Heigl In, Kimmel In, Leno Is a Maybe

Primetime TV is running along pretty smoothly these days at ABC, with "Grey's Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" at the tops of their games, but ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson still faced some tough questions on Wednesday morning at the TV critics press tour. Despite its success, the network had some trouble getting new shows such as "Pushing Daisies," "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Private Practice" off the ground. There are also rumors that ABC is trying to land Jay Leno when he leaves NBC, and that's where Wednesday began.A "reporter" in the back of the room asked McPherson about the Leno rumors, which include the possibility that Jimmy Kimmel's show would be pushed back to 12:30 a.m.
"If you were talking with Jay Leno, wouldn't that be illegal? Couldn't you go to jail for that?" the person asked, before most of the actual reporters in the room began to recognize the voice and realize that it was Kimmel in the back of the room in a T-shirt and baseball cap.
"Are you afraid that if you were to do something with Jay Leno, that Jimmy Kimmel might do something crazy to you or your car?" Kimmel asked. "I'll be in the parking lot."
McPherson said he couldn't believe that NBC was going to let Leno go when he's "at the top of his game."
"If that does happen, we'll deal with it when the time comes and Jimmy will be involved in those discussions," McPherson said.
On Katherine Heigl: McPherson said, "She's a fantastically talented actress and it's unfortunate when there's any kind of turmoil on a show, because there are so many people who work so hard to make that the Number 1 show in the country. I never like to see when any of them are in any way taken lightly. But she's absolutely staying with the show and there's an unbelievable storyline with her this year, which is essential to the season."On "Private Practice": McPherson was asked what went wrong with the "Grey's" spinoff, and he sort of agreed with the premise of the question. "One of the things that was critical is that the best episodes of the show were still when there was unbelievable medical drama," he said. "When it just became a soap opera about those people's live, it was a lot of talking. We're going to Kate (Walsh's) character back in some surgeries. (Show creator Shonda Rimes) does an unbelievable job with character, but it does best when it's on top of the medical dramas."
In other announcements, McPherson confirmed that Katie Holmes will be guest starring on "Eli Stone." "She is fabulous, it's a great role for her, there's some singing and dancing she does. It's exquisite," McPherson said.On "Dancing with the Stars": McPherson admitted that last season got a little boring when Kristi Yamaguchi became a clear front-runner and the rest of the cast was made up of basically just nice people. "There wasn't a lot going on, and I think it's good to have some controversy, something going on. It's all about compelling personalities, and those can come from all different walks of life and situations. The show, even though it's a reality competition, it's really about the characters."
"One of the things that we all felt was that it didn't feel like a real business, it didn't feel like there were real stakes, like in a hospital," he said. "They really do have to get back to helping people, saving people, as opposed to it being just this eco-friendly great place to be."

I think Victor Balta should take a writing class. This article made no sense, was difficult to follow, and sounded like a fifth grader wrote it. When I see his byline, I don't even bother anymore. Sadly, the headline for this blog caught my attention before I paid any attention to the who the writer was. Talk about ignorant and unsophisticated writing. Sheesh.Wed, 16 Jul 2008 20:12:48 GMT | whirlygirl

First, the story notes if ABC lures Leno it would bump Jimmy to "midnight". He's already on at midnight. And Jimmy's stunt from the back of the room was hilarious and pure Jimmy. ABC would be crazy to do anything to piss him off. His rating are right up there with all the other 2nd tier late night guys and he's hit a groove. He hosts a fun loose party every night that beats Dave's 2nd half (Dave looks like he's looking at his watch half the time) or Leno's celebrity **bleep** kissing festival.Wed, 16 Jul 2008 20:47:47 GMT | mikemedeiros

Of all the people, Katie Holmes??? Come on, she's just awful... I pray it is only 1 episode. Eli Stone is a great show, and in my opinion the most pleasant surprise of last season. Please don't destroy it.Wed, 16 Jul 2008 21:44:58 GMT | MNC

About Leno - first NBC is really crazy for letting Jay Leno go - replacing him with Conan O'Brien - of which I might add, I will not watch - so immature! But if ABC does get Leno, you can bet I will watch! Love Jay! And I think his peers like him much better than O'Brien. Leno is the closest thing to Johnny Carson who was the King of Late nite.Wed, 16 Jul 2008 22:48:43 GMT | Darcy

NOTE: After I posted of the typo noting Jimmy being bumped to midnight instead of 12:30 am it was corrected in the story. Thank you.Wed, 16 Jul 2008 23:40:19 GMT | mikemedeiros

I have always failed to see the attraction of Jay Leno. I have always preferred Letterman. It will be interesting to see how the viewership breaks down if Leno jumps to ABC. Could this mean that Letterman will be on top again, with Leno and Conan splitting the former NBC audience. I love Letterman, like Conan and DISPISE Leno. His success has always puzzeled me. There is no imagination in his show.Thu, 17 Jul 2008 01:32:13 GMT | dsnjd

If anything, Jay Leno should go on AFTER Jimmy Kimmel - Jimmy deserves it, he's on late enough as it is and many people stay up just to watch his show.Jimmy is absolutely hysterical and if Leno wants to stay on TV, maybe they can put him on after Conan on NBC.

Okay, I have never commented on a blog (although I have read quite a few) I pathetically feel that I should on this particular one. I am no expert ~ yet I do view various programs aired on numerous networks. Grey's is one of the shows that I DVR so that none are missed. I think Katherine is excellent in the role that she plays and should never be skewered for her opinion of her performance. Truly, could any of us do the job that she does??? If so, I'm sure the producers of "Greys..." would entertain a demonstration in the form of a taped performance. Also, she has proven her self in the film roles she has undertaken. Let the girl have her own opinion of her work!!! We certainly take the liberty to do so!!Katie Holmes ~ What exactly is anyone's problem with her? She's obviously beautiful, so why wouldnt' Tom want to be married to her???... and she's been hired for a broadway show so shouldn't we be giving her the benefit of the doubt?? i.e. Brittany's "star turn" on "When...your mother"?? Or do we hold a different standard to a woman who demonstates a bit of decorum in public?? And finally ~ to address Jimmy Kimmel (who I adore)... I can only think that this is another one of this adorable pranks that don't serve to hurt. It's a shame when the comedians that we admire do things that we THINK are designed to hurt someone they previously admired/inspired them. I'm concerned about our responses/interpretations, not theirs.
Again ~ only my opinion, not expressed to insult anyone elses!!

I would hate late night tv without Jay Leno. NBC or ABC, doesn't matter which one. Maybe Kimmel could replace Letterman!Thu, 17 Jul 2008 06:11:59 GMT | bowzer

I simply LOVE Eli Stone!!!!! We really thought this was going to be a dud when we saw the promos, but now we won't dare miss an episode. How wonderful to blend fantasy with reality in a way that makes it worth watching-even for my husband. Keep this cast in place.Thu, 17 Jul 2008 12:53:58 GMT | mommajul

I've loved Katherine Heigl since the Roswell days. Whatshe said about the writers was, unfortunatley for them,
true. Here the show has a "big time" actress, and they're
giving her "subpar" scripts. She should be one of the
featured actors, not one of the crowd. I'm glad she's
staying with the show, and I'm glad the management
team didn't cave to the media spotlight that is always
shown little comments that these people make. They
lay in wait for someone to make one little statement
that they can pounce on...then try to ruin their career
with it. On a different note...I'm anxious to see Katie
Holmes on Eli Stone. Haven't liked many of the parts
she's gotten since Dawson's. I think she's a very talented
actress though, and hope to see more of her in roles that
are deserving of her talent.
