John Locke, Resurrected!?

In this week's pivotal episode of "Lost," we learned the truth about John Locke's death—and can't believe we didn't see that coming!—got a cameo from an old friend, and found out we are headed for some serious war games.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Dead Man Walking

We knew John Locke was going to make a "sacrifice" for the island, but this filled in the blanks as to his off-island activities. After giving the frozen wheel a spin, Locke wakes up on the sand in Tunisia (where we first met Charlotte) with a camera pointed on him. Apparently, Charles Widmore and Benjamin Linus are watching you and me and the Others and especially the Oceanic Six (preferably in HD).

Next thing you know, Charles Widmore is playing Florence Nightingale, flying in specialists to treat that little BONE STICKING OUT of Locke’s leg and claiming he's not the baddie we think he is—and that Ben tricked him into leaving the island just as he did Locke. He also offers Locke a personal driver in the form of that wonderfully eerie Abaddon (Lance Reddick), as well as some cash, a passport and a new identity—Jeremy Bentham.

The Importance of Being John Locke

After adjusting to the irony of Locke once again in a wheelchair, we see him hop from Santo Domingo to Santa Monica, with multiple stops in between, visiting the gang (Sayid, Jack, Kate, Hurley and even long-lost Walt, even though he’s not an Oceanic Six-er) and failing to convince any of them to go back to the island.

What was most upsetting about all of his encounters was how cold-hearted and mean everyone treated Locke:

Sayid presumed Locke only wanted to go back to the island “because you have nowhere else to go.” Kate assumed Locke wanted to go back because she thought he never loved anyone (Kate, the man you love is ON the island, shut up and go back…p.s. can’t wait for you and Sawyer to reunite next week!). Jack tells him “Maybe there’s nothing important about you at all. Maybe you are just a lonely old man.” Damn!

It made seeing Locke wrap that noose around his neck all that more difficult to watch (though his compound leg fracture wins for most wince inducing). That is, until I was floored when Ben shows up…and strangles Locke with the electrical cord instead!

A Date with Death
~The only woman Locke ever loved, Helen Norwood, died on April 8, 2006
~Sayid married the love of his life, but she was murdered nine months later
~At the Hydra Station, Caesar thumbs through an issue of Life magazine dated April 19, 1954, featuring a headline about a hydrogen test. U.S. military soldiers arrived on Lost island in 1954 and dropped off “Jughead” the hydrogen bomb, which the Losties discovered when they time-travelled to that same year
~At the hospital, Widmore hands Locke the London Daily Tribune newspaper, dated January 14, 2005. This article appears on Page 15: “Car crash causes major traffic headaches”

Collision Course

On top of everything else, Locke is in a car wreck in this episode after Abaddon is gunned down by Ben, so it’s time to revisit the wild number of vehicular incidences on this show:

~Michael was hit by a car (the elusive Golden Pontiac) in NYC and broke his leg.
~Locke was hit by a car in a parking lot while chasing his mother.
~Juliet’s husband was run over by a bus.
~Kate’s childhood sweetheart Tom was killed in a shoot-out car crash.
~Hurley crashes his Camaro during a police chase.
~Claire and her mother were in a car crash (it put her mom in a coma for five years).
~Shannon’s father Adam Rutherford was killed in the same car accident that paralyzed Jack’s wife Sarah.
~When Jack attempts suicide on the bridge (prompted by seeing Locke’s obituary), there is a car crash which stops him from jumping.
~Michael crashed his car on the docks in a failed suicide attempt.
~Locke’s father Anthony Cooper was in a car crash in Tallahassee right before he mysteriously turned up on the island.
~Kate was in an accident with the marshal, which led to her escape, after a black horse ran onto the road…Kate saw a black horse on the island (along with Sawyer’s boar).
~Martha Toomey lost her leg in a car accident; her husband Sam Toomey (Hurley’s fellow cursed lottery winner) committed suicide.

Rabbit Stew

~Locke says he “fell down a hole” in another reference to good old Alice in Wonderland.
~The revelation of Locke in the coffin was introduced in an episode called “Through the Looking Glass.”
~A rabbit is the logo of the Dharma station called “The Looking Glass.”
~Rabbits are a symbol for fertility and we know the island has fertility issues.
~There also was a Jack-centric episode called “White Rabbit.”
~There was a rabbit in the hatch and a rabbit in Sawyer’s cage with the #8 painted on it.
~In the “Orientation” films, Dr. Marvin Candle holds a rabbit with #15 painted on it.
~Sawyer was reading “Watership Down,” starring rabbits.
~There was a white rabbit in the magic show at the old folks’ home where gramps was trying to escape from.
~Ben had a white rabbit as a child.

Mirror, Mirror
~Locke was back in a wheelchair, just as he was in the beginning. Last week, Sayid was escorted through the airport by authorities, just as he was in the premiere when Shannon reported him to security for leaving his bag unattended. And Jack woke up alone in the jungle, matching the opening scene of the first episode.

~Caesar was in line behind Jack at the airport counter for Flight 316, just as Ana-Lucia was in line behind Jack for Flight 815. Is it just me or does new passenger guy give off a cop vibe (just like Ana-Lucia was)? He’s been appointed leader of the new survivors, knows how to handle a gun, rifles through files and asks an awful lot of questions. He also noticed that Hurley and the others “disappeared” before Flight 316 actually crashed. Consider me intrigued by Caesar (Marshal Alana, not so much).

~Locke wakes up in a hospital and Charles Widmore is by his bedside. Later on, Locke wakes up in another hospital and Jack is by his bedside.

~At the Santa Rosa mental hospital, Hurley was drawing a picture of a desert with pyramids. Locke was blitzed from the island to Tunisia.

~When Locke goes to see his former little buddy, Walt says he had been dreaming of Locke: “You were wearing a suit, there were people around you…who wanted to hurt you.”

And since we now know Ben murdered Locke, it might be interesting to note the similarities of their origins:
~Locke’s mother—named Emily—was hit by a car, causing the premature birth of John Locke.
~Ben’s mother—named Emily—went into premature labor and died while delivering Ben.

Best Moments

~Locke visits WAAAALT!!!!!!!  And he’s so TAAAALLLLL!!!

~Matthew Abaddon’s unexpected death

~Locke shaking up Jack with, “Your father says hello…he says his name is Christian.”

~Hurley sees dead people, but Locke's not one of them....

~Locke DIDN’T commit suicide. Ben Linus, you bastard! (But Michael Emerson is sooo good.)

Best Quotes

“Unless I’m mistaken, I thought you were my driver.”—Locke to Abaddon

“The timing would just confuse ya.”—Locke to an inquisitive Caesar, wisely avoiding the "time travel talk"

“I haven’t tried to kill you. Can you say the same for him [Ben]?”—Widmore to Locke, when asked why he should believe him

Burning Questions

~Who do we believe: Ben or Widmore?

~Who is (more) evil: Ben or Widmore???

~What is the "war" Widmore says is brewing?

~Was it Sun who ran off in the night with Lapidus in the canoe (and why would he make it a point to take the passenger list with him)?

~Are the car crashes significant?

~Ben seemed truly surprised to learn Jin was alive, and just hearing the name Eloise Hawking drove him to strangle Locke just after talking him down from hanging himself. WHY?

~So, um, is John Locke ALIVE? Or is he just alive-ish like Christian Shepherd and Claire?

I just LOVE these articles. I see and hear it all while I watch BUT not all of it registers. I have been coming to these comcast Lost articles after watching because it helps sort it all out...a bit. So many questions still BUT I actually feel it all coming together even though i don't get it 100%. The fact that Ben and Charles didn't want John to die made me suspicious. It made me think he was supposed to die UNTIL Ben killed John. Whaaaaat? Was John gonna tell that lady (forget her name) that made Ben go crazy something very important? Is Ben and Charles just using John somehow? I think so. Why would they want to give leadership to John? For the good of all? I doubt it. I am getting more n more interested again lol. And who the hell is Kate to judge anyone on love or anything for that matter? I hope Walt and his father stay outta the picture BUT I have a feeling Walt has some special abilities that will come into play again. We will see. GREAT article :)

great episode, those who believe Ben is a good guy, don't give up on him for his actions at the end. Locke would be unable to fulfill his destiny if he had taken his own life. The Island would never allow him to commit suicide, as in catholicism. Ben knew John had to die to return in good grace as Christian Sheppard did & could not take his own life. Ben knew once John returned to the Island he would be resurrected as was CS, the Russian, Charlie & Mr. Echo. Life & death are different for the Island

the coming war is the science vs faith theme. Science, Dharma & Widmore wish to avert destiny & avoid an Armageddon they believe is coming, the Dharma mission. Science is wrestling for control over their natural destiny & is using the Island's mysterious forces & the time travel to accomplish this. Faith, Ben, the Others, & Miss Hawkins, want to course correct the (what you're supposed to do) plan Dharma has put in place & want the Island & the original destiny to play out. Is man (science) in control or do we have a fate controlled by higher forces (faith) we must not mess with. All this laid out in Season 1, man of science, man of faith. Jack vs John. witness the talk between the 2 from last week about St. Thomas. You should believe Jack!

Remember, Ben doesn't know what Richard Alpert said to Locke. So his "act of mercy" to get Locke to fulfill his destiny may not be what it seems.

And I don't know if this means anything, but do some Bible research into the meaning of the name 'Abaddon', particularly as applied in the book of Revelation. I immediately thought of it when I heard his name.

In a nutshell, though... MAN! What a great season!!!

It is pretty obvious why Ben killed Locke. Ben wants to lead. Once John filled him in on everything he needed to know, Jin, the ring, Eloise Hawking, Ben killed him.

Thanks for these recaps they are fun to read the morning after.

I don't think Helen is dead. I think she may be the woman Desmond saw in England, whose sister is caring for her. John still doesn't remember Richard from his childhood, when that come out?? I have noticed that each character is connected by at least 3 degrees of separation. I have kept notes on the seasons since it began, and I love philosophy, so I picked up on the names quickly.

Having an end date for the show is really paying off. The past three episodes have really been some of the best of the entire series. LOST is quite possibly the greatest television production ever.

I thought this would be the episode to clear up some things and although it did it left me with some many more questions. I was reading everyone thoughts above and it made me think of somethings. At this point i dont know who to believe. I can tell if Charles is telling the truth and we cant trut Ben what so ever! Good intentions or not he is cant be trusted. he is out for his own. We havent seen one person he'd yeild for. Not even his "daughter".
It was good seeing Walt again. i thought he played a key roll in the earlier season and dont feel like we are quite done with him. its like the island called him as well. I cant wait until next week. this show just gets better

I'm not a very religious person. Yet when I saw last nights episode that depicted Locke's resurrection, aired on the Catholic Holiday of Ash Wednesday, hmmmm. Any of you guys more familiar with the Season of Lent care to comment?

I am not familiar at all with the catholic religion other than what tv has depicted. Can anyone enlighten me on the season of Lent.

Lent is to mark the time Jesus spent in the wilderness before his crucifixion. During this time Jesus fasted and prayed and was tempted by the devil to reject God to save his own life.

This time is meant for repentance, soul-searching and penance. Most who participate sacrifice what they desire most for 40 days starting on Ash Wednesday until Good Friday. One year a co-worker of mine gave up cakes and sugar, another alcohol and so on. It depends on how deep you're indoctrinated in Catholicism, I guess.

I have long believe that Locke was a Jesus-like figure and this episode confirmed that. I didn't even make the connection with Ash Wednesday until another poster said it.

This episode was awesome, the show is getting better and better. I yell NO! every time the end titles come up. I hate for the show to end. This is easily the best produced show to hit TV in a long, long time. It is thrilling, frustrating and emotional every Wednesday night. When I saw Ben strangle John, I was furious, but I can't help but love him, he's sooooooooooooooo bad he's goooooooooooooooood!

I don't know who to believe Ben or Charles. Richard seems to be playing both sides of the fence, I just don't know what to believe. I wait with bated breath until the next episode.

I think that is what I love most about this show. A plane of what we believe is strangers actually have their lives intertwined with each other without even knowing it. When the series wraps up, I'd love to watch it in full on dvd in a major Lost marathon. To see how everything unfolds and connects and that the peices really DO fit together. LOVE this show!

For the person who asked, Lent is the season in which we prepare for the celebration of Christ rising from the dead on Easter. We concentrate on spiritual growth by giving up some mundane things and by prayer and doing good works.

Love these articles! Ben has done nothing but lie from the very beginning. If he were a good guy, he would at least try friendliness first. The best rpedictor of future behavior is past behavior. On the other hand, Widmore has not exactly been a good guy. He was pretty trigger-happy on the island.

What incredible posts! You all have given me so many more things to think about. I love the Lent and Easter idea. I agree that Locke was depicted as a symbol of Jesus when they showed him alive in that hooded garb.

My guess is that both Ben and Charles are evil and they are both trying to get Locke out of the way or on their side. Remember the mercenaries hired by Charles were to bring Ben to him and kill everyone else on the island. I think it will be a 3 way war.

How about this thought…Locke symbolizes Jesus (he was tempted by the devil or devils before he was killed), Richard is symbolized as God (the same forever, and ever amen. God also told Jesus he would have to die). And Jacob and now Christian are symbolized as the Holy Spirit that gives guidance. What do you all think??? WOW…this is an amazing season.

Tracy Phillips....You are an awesome writer. I really don't know how in the hell you continue to keep track of all of this crap, names, dates, places, origins, who was where when, who is whose mother, sister, cousin, aunt. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast yesterday. I like to watch the previous Lost episode right before the new episode on Wednesdays because at the bottom of the screen, it provides lots of interesting "tid bits" that I either forgot about or I missed it somehow. That keeps me abreast of what the heck is goin on, otherwise I would be totally LOST. Thank You for your wonderful insightfulness!!!
