'Lost:' They're Baaaack!

Is “Lost” making your head hurt? This season has been on fire, bursting with twists and turns and revelations, as the puzzle pieces finally start to fall into place. All a good thing.
And it looks like people are taking notice. Wednesday’s episode got a nice ratings surprise: It was the highest-rated scripted series of the night, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
And it sure was a doozy. The Oceanic Six finally returned to the island, and how they got there was out of this world.
Now it’s time to get “Lost” in the clues:
Windows to the Soul
~The enigmatic Mrs. Hawking explained there are “pockets of energy” all over the world that can be harnessed into “windows” of opportunity to get to the island, which is constantly moving (this is why the Losties were never rescued). According to the magical calculations of a “very clever fellow” (Faraday? Hanso?) and a swinging pendulum, an Ajira Airways flight from LA to Guam will put them in the exact position of the island’s next location. All they have to do is board that plane--and re-create the conditions under which they left.
~The episode opened on Jack’s eye, a device used in many episodes, with the eyes, of course, being the window to your soul. This scene of Jack waking up alone in the jungle mirrors the opening scene of the series’ pilot episode.
The Gospel of John
~The title of this episode is “316,” which is the flight number of the Ajira jet that transports the Oceanic Six to the island (and departs from Gate 15, naturally).
~John 3:16 is the Bible verse that reads: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
~“We’re all convinced sooner or later, Jack.” Ben recounts the story of Thomas the Apostle, who doubted Jesus’ Resurrection (hence his nickname, “Doubting Thomas,” and Jack is definitely one of those...so does that make Locke the Jesus figure?). Also was Ben praying in the church? Or just plotting while clasping his hands together?
~We learned that Locke hung himself and left a suicide note for Jack, which in typical control freak, stubborn Jack form, he refused to read until AFTER they’re all on the plane. I was hoping it would say, “Don’t come back! This place is DEATH!” but it simply read: Jack, “I wish you had believed me.”—JL
Father Figure
~John Locke is a proxy, or substitute, for Jack’s father (so it’s no coincidence they’re both in a coffin) to get back to the island. As such, Mrs. Hawking tells Jack he has to give Locke something that belonged to his father. Interesting that our "man of science" is now forced to take a "leap of faith."
~It always bothered me that Christian Shepherd was wandering around the island in a suit and white sneakers…and now we know it’s because Jack didn’t bother to bring him nice shoes for his burial. So for his act of transference, Jack puts his dad’s shoes on Locke’s feet in the coffin.
~The out-of-the-blue introduction of Jack’s “granddad” Ray has to be more than just a plot device to get Jack his dad’s shoes. He was trying to escape an old folks’ home with magic shows for the fourth time. Who is Ray really?
Final Destination
~Despite their adamant refusals, everyone turned up at the airport for the flight back to the island. No doubt Mrs. Hawking had something to do with getting everyone on board (springing Hurley from jail, having Sayid arrested).
~What was really interesting about the flight was how each person reflected one of the other survivors…Sayid was in handcuffs escorted by a marshal, just as Kate was on the original flight. Kate was acting shady in sunglasses, reminding me of Sawyer. Hurley had Charlie’s guitar…the unexplained element is the new passenger (Said Taghmaoui).
An Unlucky Penny?
~“I made a promise to an old friend of mine. Just a loose end that needs tying up.” That’s what Ben tells Jack as he’s leaving the church, and I’m assuming he means the threat he made to Charles Widmore that he would kill his daughter—oh Penny! How unsettling was Ben’s call to Jack when he was bloody at the marina; we know Desmond, Penny and little Charlie arrived by boat. Shades of Hannibal Lector in “Silence of the Lambs,” no?...the pay phone, the old friend…not to mention Charlotte referred to “Hannibal” last week.
Kate’s Not So Great
~Kate’s moodiness reached new levels of irritation. She and Jack have desperation sex. Kate has morning-after aloofness, Jack has morning-after cluelessness. And oh yeah, what the hell did she do with Aaron? I’m hoping she just dropped the tyke off with Claire’s mom, but when Kate made Jack promise to never ask about the kid again, well that was creepy. (And Jack just says okay? No questions on the whereabouts of his nephew?!) And what’s with Kate’s line: Just because we’re on the same plane, doesn’t make us together?
Guiding Light
~So Mrs. Hawking’s church hideaway is actually a Dharma station called The Lamp Post. It’s another reference to the “Chronicles of Narnia,” in which the lamp post is a landmark that shows the way between worlds and burns continuously without fuel. (It's been noted that when the character was introduced in Season 4, Charlotte Staples Lewis’s initials match C.S. Lewis, the author of Narnia.)
~In “The Little Prince,” the children’s book referenced two episodes ago, there's “the lamplighter” who lives on a planet that has 1,440 sunsets every twenty-four hours because it turns so fast there is a new day every minute.
~In last week’s episode, Christian Shepherd was holding a lantern to help show Locke “the rest of the way.”
~Ben was reading “Ulysses” on the plane, which features motifs of lightness and darkness, surrogate fathers and sons, heroes and saviors, and parallels with Homer's Odyssey, among many other complicated things I can’t get into here.
The Numbers Game
~After the intro with Jack waking up on the island, the caption says these events took place 46 hours earlier. But when Mrs. Hawking tells Jack they all must be on the Ajira flight, she says they have only 36 hours. What happened to those 10 hours?
~Hurley buys up 78 seats on the flight to minimize casualties. Sweet Hurley.
~Lapidus says he picked up the Ajira pilot gig eight months ago.
~Jack is in seat 8C. On the Oceanic flight, he was in 23B.
Best Moments
~The Oceanic Six (well, five) return to the island!
~The ominous scene at the marina when Bloody Ben called Jack and told him to proceed without him
~The revelation that Locke committed suicide
~The person behind the wheel of the blue VW Dharma bus (and gun) was Jin
Best Quotes
“We’re not going to Guam are we?”—Captain Frank J. Lapidus to Jack aboard Ajira Airways Flight 316
“You might want to fasten your seat belt”—Hurley to the mysterious new passenger
“My mother taught me.”—Ben, on who taught him to read (his mother died in child birth)
Burning Questions
~What did Kate do with Aaron? What are the ramifications of his not returning to the island with the rest of the O6? (Mrs. Hawking says the outcome is “unpredictable.”)
~Did Ben kill Penny? Or did Desmond beat the crap out of Ben and stop him?
~Did the O6 crash or just flash back to the island? Are we certain they are in the ‘70s? Where are Ben, Sun and Sayid? Are they the new tailies (just as the survivors were separated into two groups after Flight 815 crashed)?
~Why did Mrs. Hawking seem unfazed by Desmond’s desperate message from her son Daniel Faraday?
~The newly buff Jin is probably worth the trip, but why isn't Sun at least a little sad she might never see her child again?
~Who is the clever mastermind behind the Lamp Post?
~The Oceanic Six are back on the island. NOW WHAT?

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! All the clues are coming together, while still keeping us in the dark! How much better could it get? Yeah, more Sawyer, definitely! Ahhh, once a bad boy magnet, always a bad boy magnet. *lol*Thu, 19 Feb 2009 23:27:00 GMT | Degibu

Wow! I love Lost, but I didn't see all the symbolism. I was most disturbed by Kate and what she said about Aaron - why didn't Jack push for an answer? I can't wait for the next show! I can't say enough how much I love this show! I will be so sad when it's done. Unless the talented writers come up with something new. . . . :)Fri, 20 Feb 2009 00:26:34 GMT | MormonAmy

I don't usually theorize, I just like watching Lost. But I do have to comment on Kate - I don't think she "did" anything with Aaron. It's more likely that he got taken from her. That would make any mother (biological or not) moody. Remember - she guessed that Ben was behind the legal suit. And maybe Aaron will mysteriously end up on the island afterall. Why would Ben try to get Aaron in the first place. And btw, I nailed the scenario that Jin was still alive from the moment the ship exploded. Time will tell.Fri, 20 Feb 2009 00:39:19 GMT | Vstar_baby

I think Kate and Jack's "desperation sex" might actually have been Kate trying to get pregnant. Maybe I'm way out there but since there wasn't a pregnant Claire, with baby Aaron in her belly, on board flight 316 Kate may have known that attempting to get pregnant would help their cause in trying to emulate the conditions of the original flight. Just something to think about.Fri, 20 Feb 2009 00:48:04 GMT | Fiorenza

Honestly I could care less who designed the lamppost. My questions are what did Kate do with Aaron? I think this is going back to season 4 when Claire shows up in Kate's dream and says don't you dare bring him back referring to Aaron. So Kate had no intention of bringing Aaron. I do believe that he may have gone back to Claire's mom and said something like she was going away for a while and couldn't bring Aaron. I do believe he will show up on the island regardless. I think Ben was going after Aaron was just a way to try to get Kate on the run again and feel that the island is the only safe place. She was going to bring Aaron too was Ben's assumption. Ben is not all bad. I really don't think he knew about the Lamppost. Obviously he was lying about how he can read but come on. Someone asks you how you know to read. What are you really going to respond with. I don't think he killed Penny. I am hoping not anyway. that would make me change my opinion of him. I understood he was upset but Penny didn't deserve and I always found Ben to be somewhat of a fair guy. Maybe Desmond beat the hell out of him. Maybe he didn't. Maybe he realized it was his own fault Alex was killed as he should have never kidnapped her in the first place but then the reason he did was because he thought Danielle was crazy. So I always thought Ben had a heart. He is mysterious and that is what I do like about him. His intentions for the most part always tend to be good but he just doesn't go about them probably the way that he should. The smoke monster that defends the temple. Remember when Ben told Danielle to take Alex to the temple. He never intended for them to be bombarded along the way. I think he wanted them to get to the temple and figured the smoke monster would finish off the people after them. Now we know from season 4 that Ben or someone ben has contact with can control the smoke monster. Why was Sayid arrested but then I agree with the what someone else said that Sayid was arrested to make it be like Kate. Charlie's guitar was with Hurley as Hurley may have been sitting in the same seat as Charlie was on Oceanic 815. Don't know though. Kate was acting like Sawyer as she is in that love triangle. Kate said just because we are on the plane doesn't mean we're together meaning that Kate hasn't gotten back together with Jack. Ben got on the plane last all bruised up like Hurley was all sweaty and the last person on. Hurley could have also been sitting in Bernard's seat as he was trapped in the water needing help has Bernard was trapped in a tree. Since all they did was move with the island They was no reason for blood or anything else. There would have been no reason for Hurley to have been trapped in a tree in the airplane seat. Jin working for Dharma is of course for show as the island keeps on moving and changing timeframes. Jin obviously knew who they were and his next question is probably going to be is Sun here? Now Sun and Jin are separated but both on the island as Bernard and Rose were. Ben and Sayid and Sun are probably near where the tailies were is season 2. I agree with that. But again there will be no plane crash because I just believe the passengers were moved not crashed. But then again we don't know since we don't know if John turning the wheel had any effect. I don't think just getting the oceanic 6 back is what is going to make everything better. Like Christain said John was supposed to turn the wheel not Ben. And what Ben said about whoever turns it can never come back to the island again may have been an assumption by Ben. Again I don't think that he is all bad and constantly lies. I think he knows less about the island than he portrays. Not much less but enough to make it seem like he is lying. I also that when Jack asked bout the other passengers. He said so as if they are not important. probably could be that since there are six people on board that were on the island previously those are the only six the island is going to take or something like that. As the ones that were never supposed to leave is who the island will take back. These are my thoughts.Fri, 20 Feb 2009 01:37:31 GMT | tferreira82

Well, we all should have known all along that Jin was alive. Can't you remember him runing into every hospital looking for a Korean woman giving birth and his call phone being run over by a car as it was ringing - just after it showed Sun dialing a number?I like the fact that some questions are being answered.
I, too, questin what happened to Aaron and to Sun & Jin's baby???

I really hope Kate is the next one to kick the bucket. I couldn't stand her from day 1. The show has really gotten ridiculous. I think they should have stuck with the possibility that they landed in purgatory. Do we now have additional people stranded on the island? It's just getting too off the wall now.Fri, 20 Feb 2009 03:27:17 GMT | TiredofTVinCanton

So, I'm thinking that Aaron isn't a factor, and was, in fact, taken from Kate because when Oceanic crashed, he wasn't born yet. If they were trying to replicate the initial crash, Aaron shouldn't be there. "They" couldn't let Kate take him with her but neither would she have voluntarily gone w/out him. "It's been noted that... Charlotte Staples Lewis’s initials match C.S. Lewis, the author of Narnia." Actually, it's closer than that! Mr. Lewis' first and middle names are Clive Staples!"No doubt Mrs. Hawking had something to do with getting everyone on board". I'd be very surprised if that's the case. I'm also surprised you're willing to state it almost as fact! I have a feeling we'll find out in the next few weeks ;)

I think Kate wanted one last fling with Jack before she returns to Sawyer, that is why she made the comment to Jack. As for Aaron, she probably figured she couldn't take him back to the Island because everyone there knew he wasn't hers. She either gave him to Claire's mother or he is with Sun's child. There was one thing that confused me the most, Why didn't anyone who had seen Ben the day or two before the flight ask what had happened to him? That would have been my first question when seeing him. Wasn't Jack curious?Fri, 20 Feb 2009 05:11:55 GMT | TVShowWatcher

I love the writers. They are like chess players, always a dozen moves ahead of us. I am thumbs up that they are finally saying what I have said since the first episode that the island is always moving. Duh! I am so happy that all the actors are back that are central to the story and that finally the science is coming to the forefront. It is not religious folks unless your religion is physics. There is much more to the island than capturing people. Remember that Ben said that he harnessed the consciousness travel. He knows every possibility and just has to guide others to make it happen. He does get thrown a few curve balls once in a while. All in all, I love the show and all the characters are perfect and they stay in character beautifully. I am a fan forever.

Actually, in the episode from Season 4 called "Ji Yeon," those scenes of Jin running into hospitals were flashbacks, not flashforwards. Only Sun's scenes were flashforwards. That's the brilliance of that episode: it is only in the final minutes that we discover that Jin is in the past (trying to appease his boss) while Sun is in the future and is, in fact, alone as she gives birth to their baby. A great (but heart-breaking) surprise to wrap-up that episode. All to say, in response to the comment by "Gramsof3" above, the episode referred to with Jin in the hospitals does not give us any reason to believe Jin would still be alive now, and so we should not be expected to have "known all along" based on that episode necessarily. The only clue that he might still be alive seemed to come last season when he is shown running away from the middle of the freighter toward the helicopter, at which point the explosion could have conceivably propelled him into the ocean. And now, we have happily discovered that is indeed what happened. Very cool.

When Ben said his mother taught him to read I think she might have. Wasn't there was a scene in a previous season- I'm not sure which year, when Ben as a young boy ran away and wanted to live with the others in the woods- he met Jacob and Jacob told him it wasn't time yet or something like that. I believe I remember Ben's mother appearing to him in that episode. Maybe she taught him to read just as Jack's father appears and speaks with people. I'm wondering if we'll see Claire the same way in future episodes.
I love Lost and I think this season is great.
