'Lost:' Blast from the Past

The reveals are flying fast and furious now on "Lost" as fans devour every juicy nugget!

This week's episode, called “The Little Prince,” was framed around Kate and Aaron, and juxtaposed how she came to be his “Mommy” when they were rescued with how she may have to give him up and GO BACK.

“Prepare yourself: You are going to lose the boy,” said Dan Norton, the shady lawyer harassing Kate over Aaron’s true parentage. But as Kate said during Aaron's birth, "This baby is for all of us." He is "special" after all.

“The Little Prince” is, of course, the classic children’s story written by French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry about a pilot who’s stranded in the desert after a plane crash. The little prince (who’s in love with a rose he left behind) is on a journey and comes across six different planets that represent six different characters (could this be who our Oceanic Six are based on?). Many book references have been dropped throughout the series but this one seems to be the most telling.

On to the clues, SPOILER ALERT:

Flashdancing
~The flashes continue to alternate from night to day. And even though island time and Oceanic Sixers time is three years apart, the weather is the same. Note the storms carried from flash-to-flash.
~Sawyer and Locke stumble upon a beam of light in the sky, which we learn is the light that shown from the Hatch the night Boone died in Season 1 as Locke demanded to know the WHY of it all. Locke used to think it meant something but now it was “just a light.” Has our “Man of Faith” lost faith?
~Screams in the jungle lead Sawyer to stumble upon baby Aaron’s birth—which took place two months ago. The emotional look on Sawyer’s face as he watched Kate help coax Claire through the delivery was heartbreaking. I can’t wait for these two to reunite, I’ve been on Team Kate and Sawyer from the start, and I’ve also heard from a little birdie that we will soon find out what Sawyer whispered in Kate’s ear before he jumped off that chopper! This “season of Sawyer” is off to a tremendous start!

The Bleeders
~Charlotte is suffering from “temporal displacement” (as we learned in the pre-show pop ups), which Faraday explains as time travel throwing off your brain’s clock…like “really bad jet lag.”
~Charlotte’s collapse wasn't as life-threatening as we thought (so far); this week Red’s back to traipsing in the jungle, but now Miles and Juliet also exhibit the nosebleeds. Uh oh.

Island Babies
~When Miles gets a runny nose too and asks why me and not the others, Faraday says he thinks the nosebleeds are from the person's duration of exposure on the island. Miles says he’s only been there two weeks and the others have been there two months, to which Daniel responds eerily: “Are you sure about that?”
~So for now, I’m sticking by my theory that Faraday, Charlotte and Miles were born on the island, with Miles being Dr. Marvin Candle’s baby from the season premiere; Charlotte being the love child of Ben and his childhood friend Annie; and Faraday being the son of Mrs. Hawking and Charles Widmore (who we learned spent some time together on the island as their younger selves…couldn’t you just feel the sexual tension when he said, "Shut up, Ellie"?)

The Numbers

~Quick refresher on Hurley’s cursed winning lottery numbers just because we haven't seen them in a while: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, the sum of which equals 108. You had to “press the button” in the Hatch every 108 minutes—is this re-setting the time-travel clock?
~Desmond failed to enter the numbers and press the button in the Hatch on 9/22/2004, which caused Flight 815 to crash.
~Ben’s meeting place is at a marina, Slip 23
~Kate’s address is 42 Panorama Crest
~Sayid was unconscious for 42 hours
~A transmission of the numbers led Danielle to the island. Her scientific expedition crew got marooned on the island, developed "The Sickness" and she shot all of them, even her lover Robert, who we got to meet in this episode along with Montaund.

The Black Rock
~The Black Rock slave ship sailed from Portsmouth, Britain in 1881 from Slip 23. Ben tells Jack to meet him at the Long Beach Marina at Slip 23.
~Danielle led the Losties to the Black Rock to get dynamite to blow up the hatch (and Dr. Arzt).
~When Sawyer is zapped out of his bittersweet Kate-gazing, we see that the spot where Claire gave birth to Aaron was on an actual black rock.

Ajira Airways
~Sawyer’s gang found canoes on the island and a water bottle branded Aijra Airways. Juliet reveals it's based out of India, but they fly everywhere. Remember how plane wreckage was found at the bottom of the ocean and reported on the news to be Oceanic Flight 815? Maybe that plane was actually an Ajira jet. Did another plane crash on Lost island? Could these crash survivors be the boat people shooting at our guys? (Do we really need extra "Hostiles"?!)

More Familiar Faces
~When Locke and the gang discovered fresh wreckage on the island and he asked if anyone spoke French, we knew it was Rousseau time. Cut to a rescue raft on a stormy sea that pulls a body out of the water—who turns out to be Jin! YAY.
~But another bombshell was seconds away: while I knew this French-speaking crew was Rousseau’s team, I wasn’t ready for it to be a Young Pregnant Rousseau. Nice look of utter confusion on Daniel Dae Kim’s face, who is still unaware of the whole "We’re time traveling!" business, as Jin tries to comprehend that this lovely French girl before his eyes is the same Crazy Jungle Lady he knows from the island.
~It would seem Jin has been blasted back 16 years, since Rousseau is pregnant with Alex. When Shannon translated Danielle’s French SOS message in Season 1, Sayid deduced that the recording had been playing on a loop for 16 years. More proof: Ben had raised Rousseau’s daughter Alex as his own little "Other" and when we met her, she was roughly 16 years old. Both Alex and Rousseau are now dead, just a reminder.

Best Moments

~Jin is alive! Jin is ALIVE! Not in a flashback, visiony, fake way, he actually survived the freighter explosion!

~Danielle Rousseau pulled Jin from the freighter wreckage. And she’s pretty, pregnant, young and clean!

~Secret softie Sawyer witnesses Kate helping Claire give birth to Aaron, two months ago. Teary-eyed...

~Ben is the “client” trying to take Aaron away from Kate. Claire’s mom is off the hook and in the dark (“Who’s Aaron?”).

~Sun is preparing to go all “Kill Bill” on…someone. But who exactly is she targeting for her Jin Revenge: Ben, Jack or Kate?

Best Quotes

Sawyer: “Who came in these? Other Others?”

Miles: “I think they want their boat back.”

Sawyer: “Thank you, Lord!”…”I TAKE THAT BACK!”

Ben: “That’s my lawyer.”

Burning Questions

~Why did Jin get blown back in time 16 years? When Ben “moved” the island, why didn’t everybody get blasted to the same date? This is the second time Jin has been found afloat (also at the end of Season 1 after the Others stole Walt from the raft). Why do they keep trying to drown Jin?

~Where is Sun and Jin's daughter Ji Yeon? When Sun showed Kate a picture, it was a baby picture, yet Aaron and little Charlie are around age three. Does anyone think something may have happened to her baby that could also be feuling her revenge?

~Was pressing the button preventing the time-travel flashes all this time? Does that act re-set the time-travel clock?

~Are “The Whispers” not actually ghosts but chatty time travelers trapped in between time zones?

~No Desmond and Penny in this episode...should we be concerned?

~Has Danielle aged unfortunately or is there a larger jump than the presumed 16 years?

P.S. Dear “Lost”: When the fate of a beloved character is up in the air, please do not put their name in the opening credits! Even if you have previously announced they are a series regular, it’s still a nice surprise when they resurface unexpectedly! JIINNN! Love me some Daniel Dae Kim…even if he’s toasted like a burnt marshmallow.

I believe Jin was at the same date as the other leftbehinders but no one had been in the same part of the ocean as him at the time. The leftbehinders were on the beach with the french shipwrecked stuff that Charlotte had found, so it seems that everyone is at the same time on the Island at present.

Sun and her husband have basically traded places at this point. He is not a thug anymore, and has reformed. She has now turned into a high class thug. She is really her father's daughter. Mr. Paik should be proud.

Kate and Sawyer together? I used to be a hard core skater, not so much any more. I am tired of Kate's fickleness. I want her far away from Sawyer. He is way too good for her. I do think Sawyer and Kate will be together at the end, whether I like it or not. I just hope it isn't at Juliet's expense.

I think last night's episode was the best in a long time. So many OMG moments! My fave was Sawyer watching Kate and Claire-Wow! If you've watched and absorbed this show like I have from season 1 that scene was so HUGE! Unbelievable! Things are starting to fall into place and I'm loving it.

Jin! He was the best absolutely! Iwas so very happy to see him alive. I don't like angry Sun. Not a good look for her. I really hope they dont write Kate and Sawyer together. They are really fun to watch, everything about them being so juicy but they could never survive. they would tire of each other and and end up disliking each other so let them stay (lovers& ) friends but i am talking like Kate is back to the island. First things first. I do see this triangle becoming a box. I just knew there would be a gentle tounch, grace of the face or even a kiss between Sawyer and Juilet. That should be very interesting.

hi tracy - great blog - u r very insightful. i am under the impression that jin was actually in the same time warp as the rest of the gang - when john and group escaped the others on the outrigger - they found the french wreckage - which they commented was recent...

Hi Rita Ann,

I'm glad you liked the blog, thank you!

I agree, I think Jin was blasted along with the others when Ben worked his donkey wheel voodoo.

I just think it's interesting that Jin's been adrift twice now--why are they trying to drown poor Jin???

Hi Freckles,

You're right, the other 'Freckles' is too fickle these days...I suppose I think a little Sawyer love would lighten her up! lol...

And Mr. Paik would be proud of Sun, she's fierce.

I think the best reveal was meeting the young Charles Widmore - that really mixed it up! If you watched last week's episode before this week (with the ticker) it said on there that Widmore thinks Ben stole the island from him.....hmmmmm

I was thrilled to see Jin. I can't wait for him and Sun to reunite!!! Her as a bad-**bleep**, well she does a really good job of behaving that way. But remember her dad was like that so - it seems to come naturally...

Sawyer and Kate - I hope they end up together. Sorry Jack - but you have too much drama =) Plus when Sawyer had the flash back seeing Kate helping Claire - my heart sunk to my stomach. And then to hear him describe it to Juliette was so sweet. The bad boy belongs with the bad girl =)

Awesome blog...you have some great theroys. My sister moved and we are in two different time zones but still manage to have Lost night. She just has to stay up really late =)

In my PDX TV market area, the CBS affiliate runs reruns of Lost (Lost Again) on Sunday night. I do not know if it is coincidence or yet another time parallel, but the Lost Again episode shown on January 25th showed Locke and Boone finding the smuggling plane and Kate delivering Claire's baby. The new Lost episode a few days later featured that same plane flying over Locke's head and crashing. Locke then did the climb to the plane that he was unable to do when Boone had to do that ill fated climb to the plane. On the February 1st Lost Again, Sayeed was manipulated by the CIA to get a friend of his to become a suicide bomber so they can find a terror cell. Well, a few days later, the new episode had Ben manipulating Sayeed to get Hurley out. Also, Hurley had said at one point that he would never help Sayeed again if his life depended on it and in the new episode he goes to great lengths to help him. I'm curious if flashes to Lost Again next week will once again parallel Lost now. These parallels show that the show really did have a direction from season one even though at times it seemed like it was making things up as it went.
