As Seen On TV
'Lost' in Time

Most “Lost” fans were hooked the moment the plane blew apart in the stunning pilot, but the intrigue really set in with Charlie’s infamous line in Season 1: “Guys…where are we?”
As the story goes gunning toward the series finale next May, the Losties are now asking, “When are we?”
What was the tale of the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 has now become deeply anchored in science fiction, and for better or for worse, there’s no stopping now.
The show has previously flirted with altered consciousness, déjà vu and time travel, but Season 5 brings the full monty.
I’ve seen the first three episodes and all I can say is “Lost” is about to get even more complicated, if that’s possible. But don’t be alarmed. You’ve got to respect the effort and ambition that goes into this creative genius of a show, and trust in its superior storytelling.
After a torturous eight-month wait, new episodes are here, and so are some tidbits on this season’s adventure:
--This year the audience will learn a “greater sense of the island's history.”
--Physicist Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies), mysterious Charles Widmore, and ageless Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell) all become pivotal players this season.
--You'll definitely see Jin this season--he's a series regular. (Don’t mistake this with Jin being alive, however.)
--You won’t see much of Claire this season, she’s not a series regular. (But producers say she’ll re-emerge in Season 6.)
--As an apology to fans for neglecting Sawyer last year, Josh Holloway is heavily featured this season--and so is his bare chest. (me = smiling)
--The person that Ben works for…is “probably Ben,” say “Lost” producers.
--Desmond honors an old friend in a way that will make you want to cry.
--Jumping through time can be bad for your health. Just a warning.
--The two factions continue to co-exist on-and-off the island, as we anxiously await for them to converge. The Oceanic 6 are back home dodging bad guys (with Jack trying to collect everyone to bring them baaaaack!), while the island gang is caught in a cataclysmic time warp.
For the thought process behind the bigger picture, here are the highlights from a press conference with “Lost” producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse at last week’s TCA press tour.
On time travel:
Lindelof: “The show's been a time-travel show for the last four years. We're just making it more apparent in the storytelling now. Hopefully as Season 5 unfolds, you will realize that time travel has been in the DNA of the show for quite some time.”
On avoiding the pitfalls of time-travel storylines:
Cuse: “Well, we're on pharmaceuticals right now.”
Lindelof: “We feel we've done a pretty good job so far…[the episodes] are all the better for utilizing this island-skipping, time-travel element. We didn't want Season 5, the penultimate year of the show, just to be a stall.”
On taking risks:
Lindelof: “We've become fairly masochistic in our writing…We sit around and go, ‘Is it fraught with peril? Yes? Let's do it.’"
On the beginning of the end:
Lindelof: “We got to a point in Season 3 where we knew [the show] was treading into an area of complete and utter suckiness…. At that point we all had a decision to make which was, are we going to have an end date or is the show going to be cancelled in like a year? Because it simply couldn't go on the way that it was.”
On the significance of Ajira Airlines:
It’s so important (or not important?), one could deduce, that the bosses refused questions on it entirely.
On obsessing over “Lost”:
Cuse: “People tried to theorize about the show--this is what "Lost" is. And we always sort of said two things that, I think, become more apparent the more you watch. One is it doesn't reduce down to one simple thesis statement. And No. 2, you don't really know enough to be able to effectively theorize about where it's going to conclude.”
On the true mystery of “Lost”:
Lindelof: Nestor Carbonell, who plays the luscious-lashed Richard Alpert, “does not wear any mascara, no eyeliner, nothing. He is completely 100 percent sans makeup.”
Cuse: The true mystery of “Lost”: “Is Nestor wearing makeup?”
The two-hour season premiere of “Lost” airs Wednesday on ABC, beginning with a one-hour catch-up episode at 8 p.m./ET.

The first two seasons I watched faithfully. Then got tired of the "never ending" ending. Then SciFi brought it on their Monday night mini marathon. Got totally hooked again. Seeing it in clumps of 4 hours really gave me a much better grip on the story line. Now I can't wait for the season premier. As for the scifi-ishness, that's OK by me. What else could explain all the weirdness. As much as I hate "Ben" and all his lies (or are they?) I hope they explain him a bit more. What the heck happened to Claire? Why did they write her out?

I don't want to try to figure it out. I'm just enjoying the ride. I missed a couple of episodes from last season so the DVD caught me up. Very sneaky and twisted, Claire And Jack Are half siblings. As always... I didn't see that one coming! I am having a "Lost" party tonight. Can't wait! I love It!Wed, 21 Jan 2009 17:47:58 GMT | jinx127

I think the brilliance of the show lies in the way it is produced. It feels like your watching a high quality movie every episode. I also love how each break before a commercial ends with a climatic twist. The one thing I hope for is that lost doesn't end with questions unanswered. A sort of "create your own ending" would be very dissapointing, in my view. All in all Lost is by far the best show on t.v.Wed, 21 Jan 2009 17:50:09 GMT | bob27

"Lost" is my absolute favorite TV show ever. I've seen a lot of shows, (I'm in my seventies) and this is the best written, most suspenseful, has the best characters, terrific acting and never ceases to surprise. When it is over, I will buy all of the episodes on DVD so I can watch whenever I wish.A lot of people don't like the back and forth of the stories but I think it's great.
Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to tonight and will watch from 8 to eleven.
Kudos to the best show on TV........

I too worry that Lost has been off the air too long - even I, as an avid watcher, probably don't remember all I need to remember about who has done what to whom, etc. etc. I am new to this forum, and realize that many of you know every detail. Perhaps I am not avid ENOUGH. Anyway, I can't wait for the season to start!Wed, 21 Jan 2009 19:14:09 GMT | catsnorchids

This is absolutely the best show ever, and I'm sad we are down to thirty some episodes. I like all the twists and turns, and the only thing that makes me mad about the show was losing great characters such as Charlie. This is gonna be a great season!

I cant wait to see what happens next!! I will dvr them so I can watch them again after the show incase I missed something!! I saw Jin when Sun had the baby... he was buying that Panda... but it totally confused me ...I am hoping since the island is in a time warp that they may not be dead at all... wouldnt that be wonderful..Wed, 21 Jan 2009 20:17:04 GMT | SawyerIsMine

Lost is one of the best shows ever. But since Charlie died for no reason, I have only seen it in bits and pieces here and there. I saw the last part of the last episode from last season and was extremely upset to see my favorite person on the show in a casket. If Locke is really dead, then I will never watch it again. I hate the way the writers seem to enjoy killing off anybody they get tired of. It makes me sick. And what happened to Claire?? If she turns out to be dead I will be glad I never bought any of the DVD's.Wed, 21 Jan 2009 20:17:43 GMT | thepauper

Not interested. We will learn "more of the islands history" Oh come on. Just wrap this convaluded mess up already. I was hooked on season one and season two was good but after that it just got too messy and it lost its appeal. Too much going on with not enough answers.Wed, 21 Jan 2009 20:30:48 GMT | CaliBay

I am so very thankful for "Lost". Its success has led to the beginning of the end of the horrible reality pandemic. "Lost's" connections with sci-fi, and mystery led to the networks accepting shows like "Fringe", "The Mentalist", "Eleventh Hour", even "Ghost Whisper"...thank heavens for Melinda's .....I digress. The networks opened up to continuing story lines, a bit of mystery and sci-fi, and tv is getting better. Although I enjoy shows like "Survivor", there had been waaaaay too many "The Bachelors" and other dreck out there. Slowly the tide has turned, and mobil home america will just have to watch "reality" out on their front porch from now on.....Now if only we could get rid of "American Idol".....or at least move it to either Saturday morning or onto the cartoon network for the kids to watch, and keep the People magazine subcription buying public off of my tv, I'ld be happy.Wed, 21 Jan 2009 21:46:02 GMT | sjmodrepub

As for all of you that think Claire is dead...I don't think so. They revealed that Jack and her are half siblings for a reason. Supposedly in some of the clips for teasers of season 5 they say that everyone will die if Jack doesn't come back. Maybe there is one thought in the back of his mind that Claire might still be alive and since it is family it might be another driving force to go back. Remember Jack always needs something to fix. And if she is coming back in Season 6 that would leave me to believe that jack and claire will be reunited. Claire is not being written out. She is just not an intricate part of season 5. Just like the Others didn't become intricate until season 2 and more in season 3. Also I don't think Ben is all bad. I think he was initially perceived that way because he lies. There is some honor in what he does. He really did love Alex his stolen daughter. He first said blow up the freighter and then said there are innocents on board and I will not be responsible for their deaths so don't do it. And I do think Locke is dead and they don't kill people off for no reason or just decide that they don't like them. Locke dies for a specific reason as all the people do. They always find a way to explain the deaths of people in a believable way even though some seem random at first thought. Locke being dead is important to the storyline and also this show is only going on for another season after this one before it comes to end so they need to start bringing everything to a close with the story. Locke is in charge of the others. Maybe the reason he dies is because it is time for someone else to be the leader. Ben had a tumor and I think the island tried to kill him off because they wanted Locke. Maybe Locke does something foolish that makes the island want somebody else. Who knows. Maybe Jack or Sayid but probably more so Jack. I could see Jack and Claire even though they are brother and sister being the leaders of the Others when this whole thing is over and done with and Jack will make peace with is father. These are my theories and I don't know how close they are to reality of the show but they are my theories.Wed, 21 Jan 2009 22:10:41 GMT | tferreira82

How I LOVE Lost! Yes, they kill off characters, but with all the back stories, forward stories, you never know who you'll see next. This has to be my favorite show ever. I feel like I know all the characters and care about them. It'll be interesting to see just how far they go in using the time travel vein this season. Can hardly wait to watch tonight! We're having a Lost party too--Bring it on! It's been a long eight months!Wed, 21 Jan 2009 22:11:59 GMT | janie974

I originally thought Lost was interesting and fun to watch but my interest has waned due to the many twists and turns in the storyline. It is like the writers don't know where they are taking the viewers or they just figure we are idiots and don't remember specifics about a storyline so they just change the details to suit their own whims or to fit character changes if deemed necessary. Argggghhhh!Wed, 21 Jan 2009 23:45:06 GMT | bobcat63

I'm psyched about the show. I have never missed it despite how bizzare it got. I am, however, NOT looking forward to Sawyer being given a lot of time. I hate his character, and I know he will end up with Kate, and jack will be destined to some greek tragedy fate. There is no justice.Thu, 22 Jan 2009 00:52:32 GMT | bodean

After a mildly intriguing debut, this show seems to have "Lost" any semblance of direction, cohesion or interest. The writers are literally phoning in their most inane and trivial musings. It reeks of desperation. The plot has more holes than Obama's economic stimulus plan. They'd like you to believe they plotted this course all along. Sure. And Lucas originally planned on making six Star Wars movies. Or was it nine? Or twelve? Sorry, this show was never very good and is now absolutely pathetic and boring. Spoiler Alert: Fonzie shows up and he brought his water skis!Message Edited by quickness on 01-21-2009 11:49 PM

I disagree that Lost needs to end. I love the flashbacks to the former lives of all those on the island. They could do a lot more of that and I would love it.I'm a big Star Trek TNG fan and time travel always confuses me. :) But I hope that the time travel on Lost will clear up things rather than confuse me more.
Where did the island go? That's what I want to know.
And I can't get enough of John Locke. I've loved this actor since I saw him in The Stepfather. He has the 'kindest' face, yet plays the best not-so-kind character. There's always something shifty about the person Terry O'Quinn plays, and this show was made for his unique acting abilities.
