'Dancing with the Stars' Week 3 Recap

The injuries pile up, tempers flare and Cloris Leachman wigs out. Welcome to Week 3 of “Dancing with the Stars.”
I’ll tell you right up front what viewers were forced to wait two hours to find out Monday night: Misty May-Treanor’s “Dancing” days are over. The gold medalist suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during practice and was forced to withdrawal from the competition. For more on Misty’s injury, click here.
There were plenty of other moments shaking things up too.
Even though it’s early in the game, the pressure seems to be getting to a few of the contestants. Brooke Burke and Derek Hough had a tiff in their rehearsal segment, but it didn’t hurt their performance—they not only came in first place yet again with their Viennese Waltz, they also scored the first 10 (from Len!) of the season. By the time Brooke and Derek were backstage answering inane Samantha Harris questions, they were all hugs and smiles.
Susan Lucci also snapped at her partner Tony Dovolani during practice, but ever the gentleman, Tony is patiently trying to build her confidence. Lucci’s desire for perfection has been turning out acceptable yet restrained performances. Lucci also turned up with her ankle wrapped in a bandage, which may have contributed to a somewhat unsteady jive.
Warren Sapp continues to surprise with his versatility, this week unearthing his more sensitive side for a romantic waltz that swept partner Kym Johnson, the audience--and the judges--off their feet.
After admitting his confidence took a hit from last week’s scores, Maurice Greene bounced back in a big way with a spirited, lively jive that Len Goodman called his and Cheryl Burke’s best dance yet.
Cody Linley and Julianne Hough’s jive took a dive with some gratuitous choreography that had Cody playing air guitar with Julianne’s leg, which the judges found silly and so did I.
Rocco DiSpirito and Karina Smirnoff received mixed reviews of their waltz: Len “didn’t mind it.” Bruno called Rocco a “lump of mashed potatoes.” Carrie Ann said he has a “likable puppy dog quality” and is the most improved dancer so far. Amazingly, he wasn’t called out for stealing Jerry Seinfeld’s Puffy Shirt.
And for her "Vietnamese" waltz, Toni Braxton and Alex Mazzo took a big risk with Marie Antoinette costumes—that added 22 lbs. to her frame—and fantastically creepy waltzing music in a dance that only Carrie Ann claimed to “get.” Len and Bruno, not so much.
Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer continue to be good dancers with bad scores. Their scores aren’t terrible actually but they also don’t reflect Lance’s true talent. The pair broke their rebellious streak for the waltz—and really, did they have a choice?—which was “a bit labored” but had “great musicality.”
Cloris Leachman and Corky Ballas “performed” a “jive” that Bruno called “beyond comprehension.” It reminded me of circus clowns, especially when Cloris carried on with gusto even after she accidentally lost her wig! I haven’t been that disturbed by a hairpiece malfunction since Marcia Cross ripped off her wig on “Melrose Place.”

Brooke Burke and Derek Hough: 28
Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson: 25

As for how the unfortunate withdrawal of Misty and Maks affects this week’s elimination…that will be explained on Tuesday’s results show, which will feature filler-tainment by Jennifer Hudson, Kool and the Gang and the Rockettes.
Elimination prediction: Cloris, it’s been fun.

Hello All! I think that NO ONE will go home tonight because of Misty having to leave. If they send another couple home tonight it will throw their numbers off. As much as I would love to see Cloris hit the bricks I think we will have to suffer through another week with her.Tue, 07 Oct 2008 13:07:28 GMT | MadRN

Tony Braxton, what a dissapointment you were last night! You looked so attrocious that you could not even sit most of the night due to your aweful Halloween outfit. Who in the world inspired you to do such a thing? You are a beautiful lady, and your dresses have been as expected, but dear, last night you lost it!

If Cloris doesn't leave there is something wrong. Yes she deserves applause for doing this at her age but come on give someone who can stand up when they are done dancing your vote.Tue, 07 Oct 2008 15:10:12 GMT | Grammasuz

Maybe DWTS could do something different this time. Still go forward with the elimination, BUT bring back Ted McGinley to even out the weeks as if Misty May-T hadn't dropped out. I thought he had more talent than the ones that have been eliminated.Tue, 07 Oct 2008 19:52:58 GMT | Newby1

Oops! I hadn't seen this blog yet and posted on yesterday's. I, too, was curious about how tonight's show would play out and whether or not anyone would be eliminated. I think it's time for Cloris to walk and hope she doesn't get an undeserved reprieve due to Misty's injury.I was unable to get on the DWTS site to vote last night but would have cast my ballot for Brooke. She's awesome!

We really didn't have to wait the two hours to know Misty wouldn't be back - it was evident when they left her out of the opening line-up that she was done. I think that in order to have the show reach the appropriate number of weeks, they will send no one home this week since they lost Misty. But it really is time for Cloris to be eliminated. This isn't a comedy performance, it's a dance competition. Yes, she's a riot - but to keep her on the show for "fun" is unfair to the others who are able to take it seriously.Tue, 07 Oct 2008 23:16:51 GMT | younghotmom

Let's face it..., DWTS has changed since the first time it appeared. I give credit to all those dancers having to 'show non-professional dancers' how to balance the footsteps with the music. I also give credit to those celebrities who volunteered to participate, including Cloris. That woman is an entertainer..., and no doubt the public is enjoying the entertainment. At least, the judges are serious in their judging, comments and low points. You are correct that Cloris may not last long on the dance floor. She is enjoying herself while she can. Can you imagine her reaction when they finally tell her to go home? Everyone is enjoying themselves..., and do the best they can...Wed, 08 Oct 2008 07:22:06 GMT | ms_zelda

Cloris is a great comedian BUT she needs to b gone from this show, she is turning it into a farce! I never believed the scores were rigged, but with Cloris not being voted out after the performance she gave this week, I have to wonder. I have watched this show since the beginning, but with her antics I am considering tuning out!! Come on, wake up producers and let her go!!!!!Wed, 08 Oct 2008 11:25:18 GMT | taxlady

That's it - I've had it!!!!Tired of wasting my evening watching Cloris L. -
To say that ANY of the others are worse than Cloris is ridiculous!!
All of the others are a pleasure to watch as dancing entertainment - that's what the show is about - dancing - not stupid antics.
To tell Rocco and Karina that THEY are the bottom is a slap in the face of all those who actually are working hard at dancing -- the judges continuously slam Lance and Lacey for their techniques - and yet Cloris doesn't even try or have a technique related to dancing!!!!!
I really enjoy Lance and Lacey's routines and they are very good!!
Warren and Brooke are both excellent!! I just love watching Warren - his smile and wink are a winning combination with his abilities - He and Kym really "click"!!
As for degrading and slamming others while permitting Cloris to ruin the show, I'm sick of it!!

My husband and I have grandparents in nursing homes, and Cloris Leachman has swept the senior set off their feet. We don't enjoy seeing her "dance" anymore than you do, but we get it that these seniors need some encouragement in life too. We think the mean selfish comments by posters on Comcast are reprehensible and reflect their own self absorption. IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU, OK? Have some heart for someone besides yourselves.Message Edited by Gigi_R on 10-08-2008 08:19 AM

Please get rid of Cloris!!! No one should have gone home this season before Cloris! Maybe the judges should have the power to eliminate a contestant at the end of each show if they don't dance at a accepted level. This is a dance contest . No one this season should have gone home before Cloris. She should not have been saved last night, they could have let her go and brought back Kim K. to even out the contest.Wed, 08 Oct 2008 12:38:43 GMT | Damar

Dwts is a entertainment tv spot created to get your attention at the appointed time; thats all. Nothing wrong with that I guess. Look at some of the acts they promoted on Americas got talent, come on! As long as there are viewers there will be acts like Cloris beating out more deserving. Enjoy the show!Wed, 08 Oct 2008 13:11:26 GMT | cubyman
