The first couple of days on "Survivor" are always pretty tense. Even the slightest mistake can lead to you taking the long, lonely walk. We had a chance to talk to this season’s first castaway, Carolina (pronounced “caro – lee – na”) Eastwood the day after she was sent packing.
Gordon Holmes: So, what happened last night?
Carolina Eastwood: I got blindsided, man! That’s what happened, I got booted, I got kicked out. Let’s just keep it raw and real, I’m not going to sugarcoat it.
Gordon: Was it really because you were perceived as bossy, or was there something that didn’t make the show?
Carolina: There are so many parts that didn’t air. You know, I wasn’t being bossy, but I was being bossy. OK, I’m going to contradict myself. I wasn’t bossy, but I was bossy about the shelter. We were on Day 3 and still didn’t have a shelter. We slept on the beach. And unfortunately I was forced to wear the red dress, so I had no clothes on and the temperatures dropped so low that I was freezing my butt off. And I was like “If we get our shelter built, then we can relax, and then we can sleep. It wouldn’t be as bad.” My tribe didn’t think it was that important. There’s other stuff you didn’t see in the episode, I’m far from bossy, but I’m very honest and straightforward. And that’s what got me in trouble.
Gordon: Now you mentioned the red dress, but why were you wearing cowboy boots?
Carolina: OK, those were JT’s cowboy boots, they weren’t mine. The platforms I was wearing with the red dress, I actually chucked them. On the hike, four-hour trek that was ridiculous, my tennis shoes got soaking wet. So when we got to the tribe JT had tennis shoes and cowboy boots, but he never wore the cowboy boots, so I stuck my little feet in them. I thought they were great.
Gordon: Yes, they were adorable. Not practical, but adorable.
Carolina: (laughs)
Gordon: At one point Taj took you aside to mention that you were being bossy. How did you react to that?
Carolina: I reacted very cool. I was kind of taken back, because everything she was saying is a lot like she is. I’m thinking, “Wait a minute, you’re the same way. You’re just as boisterous as I am, and you’re just as opinionated as I am.” In a lot of ways she was right and in a lot of ways she was wrong. But, I wasn’t going to make it into something it didn’t need to be.
Gordon: At the time, did you know that Taj was a member of SWV?
Carolina: Oh, I knew that from the get go, but it wasn’t my place to call her out on it. And I was a huge fan of SWV, when I saw her my mouth hit the floor. I was like, “Ooh girl, I bought your CD when I was in middle school. You don’t even know!”
Gordon: Do you know if other players knew?
Carolina: I think Spencer caught on. But I don’t think anyone really knew. I think the other tribe knew.
Gordon: When you first arrived and had to vote somebody off, did you think that person was going to be leaving the game?
Carolina: No, I knew that there was a twist. A couple of things went through my mind, I know that CBS did not spend all this money to bring them to Brazil just to send them home. I thought that maybe they were switching. That Sandy was going to Timbira and Sierra was going to come to our tribe.
Gordon: What were you thinking last night watching Sandy search for the idol?
Carolina: I thought it was hilarious. I love Sandy, I love that lady. She is the craziest person you will ever meet. She has the biggest heart. I hope she goes really far. But I’m like, “Sandy?! How do you not know what ten paces are? Are you retarded?” All of us were like, “What the hell is she doing? Where is she? Why isn’t she helping us build a fire pit.” I should have went looking for her. I could have gotten that idol! But how do you not know what ten paces are?
Gordon: Could you give us an idea of what the temperatures and terrain are like in that section of Brazil?
Carolina: In the daytime it can get up to 137 degrees with humidity. So, you can’t even breathe, it’s so hot. Even in the shade it’s scorching hot. And the mosquitoes and the flies are…I’m from Panama, and they’re worse than Panama. It was insane. And then at night the temperatures would drop down to like the fifties or sixties. We were freezing cold. The challenge, when we did the challenge it was 120 degrees that day. We couldn’t breathe. There was just no oxygen. It was horrible.
Gordon: Let’s go over your tribemates so you can help us get better acquainted with them, let’s start with Joe.
Carolina: Southern gentleman.
Gordon: JT?
Carolina: Watch out for him.
Gordon: Sandy?
Carolina: She’s crazy.
Gordon: Spencer?
Carolina: Not so much.
Gordon: Sydney?
Carolina: Love her!
Gordon: Taj?
Carolina: Wow.
Gordon: And Steven?
Carolina: God, I hope Steven takes it home!
Gordon: What do you take from your time in Brazil?
Carolina: I take growth, I take inner strength that I’ve never had before. I’ve always had strength, but it’s another type of strength I can’t explain. I’m so thankful for my life, my family, my friends, the people that I love. Brazil will always be one of the keys to my heart and I am so fortunate.
