Spoiler: Result Night Shocker on 'Idol'

Matt Giraud"American Idol" history was made Wednesday. More on that in a moment.

It's hard to believe that one hour is the same amount of time on Tuesdays as it is on Wednesdays. The performance show always runs long and this week the judges were cut in half to try to keep the show running on time. Yet, on Wednesday night's there's nothing but fluff.

We started with a video in which the "Idols" sang J. Geils Band's "Freeze Frame," then they performed "Maniac" from the movie "Flashdance." What? No Jennifer Beals in the audience?

Then they pimped Zac Efron's new movie "17 Again," and he made a cameo in the crowd.

And finally, it was time to get to some results. Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert's names were called first, and both were safe. The news wasn't so great for Anoop Desai, who was the first singer to land in the bottom three.

A Jennifer Hudson retrospective that noted the singer and actress got her start on "Idol" preceded her performance. Strangely, there was no mention of the fact that she was booted in eighth place. Since she left in Season 3, she's won an Oscar and a Grammy and gone through a devastating family tragedy. Hudson said it was like coming full circle to be on the "Idol" stage again. She sang her new song, "If This Isn't Love."

Anoop was a little frustrated to be in the bottom three, but said the voting was up to the viewers. Paula said something about Anoop having a magical voice. Ryan asked Simon if Anoop deserved to be sitting there. Simon said, "Yes."

Kris Allen stood up with Lil Rounds, and Simon took a moment to chime in about Kris, who didn't get a critique from Simon on Tuesday night.

"Kris, you were brilliant," Simon said.

Lil repeated some of her frustration about being told one thing, then another, by the judges.

Ryan asked Kris to take a seat on the couch of safety, sending Lil to the bottom three.

Matt Giraud and Danny Gokey were the final pair of singers to stand up and learn their fate. I kind of love the fact that Ryan strung Danny along a little, hinting for just a second that Danny might be in the bottom three. Danny looked panicked, but Matt was the one to take the final spot in the bottom three.

Ryan immediately sent one singer to safety. It was Anoop.

That left Matt and Lil in the bottom, and Matt was the bottom vote-getter.

After Matt sang for his life, Simon told him he didn't think he had a chance to win the competition. The comment stung, as Matt shook his head.

Then, Simon said, "It's good news."

Matt was blown away as Ryan announced, "Idol history has been made," due to the fact that for the first time in eight seasons, the judges used their own discretion to save a contestant who'd been voted off.

Simon reminded everyone that the news wasn't entirely great. Two singers will go home next week, and next week's theme is disco!

Matt cried as the rest of the singers surrounded him and congratulated him.

It was right to use it on Matt. Would have not been right to send Matt home before Lil.

VICTOR, they had to use it this week or next, before the final 5.

Agreed Mama62 good use of the save and it appears to be a nice feature of AI.

They saved two tonight. Matt and the wart.

First of all, I can't believe Lil wasn't the one with the least votes based on the forums and blogs.

Second, I think when Simon said what he did when he was asked if they might use the SAVE, it was very odd. Wouldn't the general public, after last night, think the 'surprise' would be Lil if they saved her? Weird, I think.

Matt did REALLY good on the group song tonight, but the one he did last night was even worse tonight in my opinion. Tonight during the group song, he was really able to show what he can do with something OTHER than what the judges have been saying he SHOULD be doing.

Idolmind: The idle mind is the devil's workshop...ever hear that one? If you were reading this last night, you should know I'd be upset that you make fun of something like that. I think your comment was uncalled for.

People sure can be cruel.

The judges would only have had one more week to use the save if they hadn't used it tonight.

Matt's performance was not the worst one last night--Lil's was. I think Simon was right when he said Matt didn't have a shot at winning and so I am not sure why they used it. I think they should have let him go. He had already been "saved" once before sort of because he was one of the judges wild card picks.

The only contestant in the bottom three tonight that would have been deserving of the save IMO would have been Anoop because he gave a wonderful performance last night and has been getting better.

Now two people will go home next week. Hopefully, we won't have a "shocker" like Allison (who has already found herself in the bottom twice). I think it might have been better to hang on to it for a shocker and if there wasn't one, then simply not use it at all...

Simply put, Matt's exit would not have been a shock and he is very lucky indeed to be given another shot.

I agree with you RedMomma - you got it right!

Unfortunately, it means seven again next week. I hope they don't get in to a timing problem again.

Thu, 16 Apr 2009 02:30:33 GMT | IdolMind

I think they were gonna use it no matter what next week. Why have it otherwise?

Thu, 16 Apr 2009 02:31:58 GMT | Fairburne69

Whether it be one this week and one next week. Still adds up to 2. Zero this week, two next week.

End result the same.

Disco week next. Whoppee.

Agree. I hope we don't have to see the 2 judge thing again!

I agree with whoever it was who said it was only right that Matt not go home before Lil. I think there is a lot more talent in Matt than what people know. He just needs to stay out of that falsetto range. Not everybody has to be able to sing with a falsetto to be a hit. I don't think Matt will win either, but has way more talent than Lil...and more appeal than two others up there. I think he'll be one of those people you'll hear about for a long time no matter where he ends up in the end.

Saving Matt gives Matt a chance to WOW us and the judges, to make up for his bad week this week.

Thu, 16 Apr 2009 02:34:35 GMT | mama62

It should be interesting next week how they handle the "time" question on results night. They will have two contestants going home--two farewell songs, etc. I guess they will just have to put in less "fluff and nonsense".

Thanks for agreeing with me geenielyn.

He WOWED me tonight with the lead in that group song...that was super...and interesting that it wasn't what the judges keep trying to get him to sing.
