Old Habits Hard to Break for All-Star Managers

As I watched Tuesday night’s epic All-Star Game unfold, something kept me from enjoying the festivities as the celebration turned into a classic.

It was somewhere around the 12th inning of the AL’s 4-3, 15-inning win over the NL when I suddenly became enraged with how things were playing out.

“This is ridiculous,” I thought. “If this game is supposed to ‘count,’ why isn’t it being managed that way?”

Why were baseball’s biggest stars confined to the dugout when the All-Star Game was in its most important moments?…

Indecision for Favre, Paterno Proving Selfish

Are we doing this to them? Or are they doing it to themselves?

Two football legends, one a player and one a coach, appear to be ripping apart the legacies they created by refusing to confront the future. Brett Favre and Joe Paterno, names that will rank among the all-time greats in football history, each deciding to remain indecisive about life after football.

I’m not overly concerned about their legacies. I’m sure they aren’t concerned either—they’re too close to it. So if they want to brush aside history’s hospitality by remaining in the game too long, that’s their call.

Speak Freely—Just Don’t Say Anything

I am a practicing Roman Catholic. I tell you this because both Jacobson and Majerus are accused of offending every single Catholic who kneels down before bedtime each night.

This is not the case, even though one’s comments are disheartening and another’s are immaterial.…

Congress Addicted to Slamming Baseball

After watching and digesting Congress’ latest attack on our national pastime, I came away wondering one thing—what was the point?

It’s not a waste of taxpayers’ money to clean up sports on all levels, whether high school, college, or pro. And it’s important for the government to follow up on the hearings it held nearly three years ago.…
