Sports' Best 'Staches

We have a lot of debates in the sports news room. Who's the most dominant athlete ever? Who's the best team of all time? Who do we most want to see in the next Maxim spread?

But nothing, and I mean nothing, sparks up a better debate than:

Who has the best mustache in sports?

Do you go with the handlebar of Rollie Fingers or the push-broom of Mike Ditka? Do you prefer the follicle caterpillar on Donnie Baseball or are you a Keith Hernandez guy? There are as many takes on the Great Mustache Debate as there are warm upper lips.

You missed two of the best ever:
St. Louis Cardinals reliever Al "The Mad Hungarian" Hrabosky, and

Aussie tennis legend John Newcombe, whose logo for his tennis camp is a tennis ball with a mustache.

As for me, nobody has seen my upper lip without whiskers since 1980. I first decided to grow one (once I was able to do so) when the 1970s Tennis Boom brought Newcombe to prominence. So I vote for Newcombe.

I was glad I wasn't the only thought who thought Hrabosky's absence was VERY conspicuous. If you've got Hogan on that list, then you can't leave off The Iron Sheik; IMO a far better 'stache than Hulk's. And really, what's on Crosby's face cannot be considered a mustache. There are women all over Italy with better mustaches than that. How could you put him on but leave off Derek Sanderson?
