The Empire Strikes Back

By Lee Russakoff

Why all the long faces, Philly fans? Philadelphia beat New York Saturday night. It was a great battle; both teams fought hard. But in the end, the Sixers put up 141 points and took down the Knicks in OT.

Take that New York.

What? There was a World Series game, too? Cole Hamels was on the bump?

Uh oh … That can’t be good.

Saturday night hurt. It hurt badly. The city was ready for a party. Sure, the Phightins dropped Game 2, but Philly is used to the team dropping Game 2 … and only Game 2. For four straight playoff series, the Phillies had bounced back after Game 2 losses to win Games 3, 4 and 5 and take the series.

That streak is over.

Now the Phillies have lost two straight games for the first time in two postseasons. They are trailing in a playoff series for the first time in two years … and their 2008 World Series MVP is a hot mess.

All seemed right in the world for three innings. The Phils jumped on Pettitte early, Cole was pitching like he turned the clock back to 2008 (friendly reminder, turn your clocks back now) and the rain that delayed the game 80 minutes had dissipated to a mist.

But it was all a trap. Hamels had been corrupted by the Dark Side. Sure, he appeared to be Phightin with the Alliance, but apparently he made a secret deal with Darth Swisher to save his soul at the expense of the men in Red.

Hamels sailed through the first 3 1/3 innings without allowing a hit, then he lost Mark Teixeira on a close 3-2 pitch and all hell broke loose.

“It was a strike,” Hamels said.

No, Cole, it wasn’t. The umpire gets to decide which pitches cross the plate and which do not, and the sixth pitch of the Teixeira AB was most certainly called a ball.

How do I know? Because I watched you implode as soon as the call didn’t go your way.

Hamels followed the Tex walk with five hits, another walk and five earned runs over the next three outs. By the time Charlie finally went to get him, Hamels had turned a three-run lead into a two-run deficit. And for his effort, he was serenaded by the Philly crowd with a boisterous Bronx cheer.

And thus ends Cole Hamels’ free pass in Philadelphia. The city is very appreciative of Cole for helping break the 100-season championship drought. But now that we’ve tasted success, we’re addicted. We want more. And we’re not going to stand idly by while Hamels throws away a back-to-back title chance because his panties are in a bunch over a ball/strike call.

I hope you enjoyed those 367 days of boo-free ball, Cole (well, as boo-free as ball gets in Philadelphia). Because that’s over now. As of November 1, you’re going to be treated like every other athlete in this town, and me thinks you aren’t going to like it.

Especially if you fold like an omelet every time a call doesn’t go your way.

That’s seven straight horrendous starts for the one-time Phillies ace (1-5, 7.32 ERA over that span). And it’s not like he’s slowly figuring it out. In his four postseason starts, Hamels is 1-2 with a 7.58 ERA. He’s also given up seven HRs this postseason. Seven. That ties the MLB single-postseason record.

There’s no coming back from this … there’s no redemption. Not from a guy like Cole, who is already reserved to the fact that anything that can go wrong for him this season, will go wrong.

"That's been the story of my whole season," he said. "I can cruise through batters and, then, boom!

"I don't hit a small speed bump. I hit a big one."

When a reporter asked Hamels if he was ready for the season to end, Cole said, “I can’t wait for it to end. It’s been mentally draining.”

Really Cole? You can’t wait for the season to end? You’re down 2-1 in the World Series. You were the presumptive starter for Game 7. You should be cheering on this team to extend the year, not begging to get it over with.

And now the real problem sits with Charlie Manuel. What if this series does go seven? What if the Phillies can get two wins out of Blanton, Lee and Pedro? There’s no way you can throw Hamels back out there, can you? There’s no way you can expect him to suddenly turn it around after seven straight horrendous outings. Not after he’s publicly said he’s ready to throw in the towel.

But before we get to Game 7, this team needs to figure out how to win Game 4. On paper, Blanton vs. Sabathia is a huge advantage for New York. But this game isn’t played on paper. And this team won’t believe it’s beaten until it has made all 108 outs. The Yankees now have gotten them 54 times.

That’s halfway there. The glass is half-full. Or is it half-empty? I’m still not sure. I’ll have to get back to you once Game 4 is over

Take That and Rewind It Back

Saturday night, late October, Citizens Bank Park, Game 3 of the World Series, unseasonably warm … rain delay.

Hmm… didn’t we do this already? You know, like 371 days ago?

If only the happenings on the field could’ve been as similar as the circumstances around the game… but alas, these Yankees aren’t the Tampa Bay Rays. Don’t forget, Phillies fans, you wanted the New York Yankees. You begged for the best.

Now that you got it, let’s not get queasy just because the Phillies are being pushed to the limit.

Remember, "Anything in life worth having is worth working for." – Andrew Carnegie

And also, “You don’t call retarded people retards. It’s bad taste. You call your friends retards – when they’re acting retarded.” – Michael Scott

Pettitte Is Irritating and Has Way Too Many Ts in His Name

Being an NL guy, I haven’t seen much of Andy Pettitte this year. But every Yankees fan I know insists he had a great year, so I’ll buy it (though 14-8 with a 4.16 ERA doesn’t qualify as great in my book).

But after watching his Game 3 start, I’m beginning to believe his entire strategy is based upon annoying opposing batters until they eventually give up. I mean, is there a more painful pitcher to watch? Those first two innings were absolutely brutal. I’m pretty sure he took a bathroom break between pitches in that first-inning Ryan Howard AB.

But if you ask Pettitte, he was just grinding.

“It was a battle tonight. I wasn't able to get ahead. I wasn't able to get my breaking ball over. You know, fortunately enough, they had some lefties in the lineup that I was able to cut some balls, get them away from them in some big situations and able to get some outs when I needed to get some. But it was a grind tonight for me, where I've been feeling like I've been able to put the ball right where I want to all post-season so far.”

Wait, a pitcher who is able to win despite not having every little thing go his way? What a novel concept.

That right there was your entire ballgame. Pettitte struggled and overcame. Cole struggled and imploded.

Ninety percent of the game is half mental. And when you compare the mental strength of the two Game 3 starters, you get the biggest mismatch this series has seen yet.

Line of the Night

My buddy lives in New York, but is a born and raised Philly fan. He took the train in today and is going to all three games. When he got off at 30th Street, three large men decked head-to-toe in Yankees gear.

He turns to them and asks,

“Hey boys, you staying for the parade?”

God, that would be a lot funnier today if the Phils had won Game 3 …

Tweet of the Night

The tweet of the night comes from Enrico, over at the700level.com. No lead up necessary:

“This game better start soon because Cole Hamels turns into a pumpkin at midnight.”

See, it’s funny because Cole has been more of a mirage than himself all season … and like a pumpkin, he’s soft and mushy inside…

Actually, it turns out Enrico is a bit of a prophet. He was just off by about an hour. Cole’s night fell apart just as the clock was striking the 11 pm ET hour. Maybe Hamels got confused about which way to push the clock. I know I can’t be the only one perpetually confused by that spring forward/fall back mnemonic.

Glee Cast Moment of the Night

I peed next to the handicapped kid from “Glee.” Guess what? He can walk! It’s a miracle.

Maybe those evangelical healers are as amazing as they appear on television, maybe I’m a cast member on ABC’s “Lost.” Either way, I’m in the middle of pretty badass scenario.

Halloween Costume of the Night

Many people have a crisis of conscience when their childhood hero lets them down later in life. I was never one of those people.

I will always love Lenny Dykstra. I don’t care how many grandmother’s pensions he steals or World Series rings he hocks or creditors he doesn’t pay. For me, Nails will always be that spunky centerfielder who hit .348 with four HRs, eight RBIs, and slugged .913 in the 1993 World Series (and he did it clean!).

So there’s probably a bit of bias involved in this pick, but when Nails shows up in costume … he going to get my vote every time.

I think deep down inside, the Phillies know their not playing Tampa Bay. There is always a chance to win, but not against the mighty Yankees. Philly fans know that and they also like to cry a lot. I think crying is their favorite past time. If they weren't able to scream and yell and cuss at the players (regardless of what sport) they my as well move to New England. Thats Philly, crybabies of the sports world.

C'mon, the Yankees get every call, esp. in Yankee Stadium. It's a bought victory! So they have all the money, they steal players from every other team, and their fans are the worst!!! Aside from Jeter, they're the typical Yankees....obnoxious!

Cole has been a wreck. I can't remember ever seeing a pitcher completely disintegrate under pressure, every time he walks out to the mound? Who the hell was calling the pitch selection with all of the curve balls? Its not an out pitch for him, its a setup pitch to change the timing and eye level.

There were so many frickin things that infuriated me last night. Remember way back in the middle of the season when the Phils were losing left and right, no one could drive in runs, etc? I saw some of that last night. Case in point, Pedro Feliz has a 3-1 count and takes a fastball in the middle of the plate, only to swing at an offspeed pitch in the dirt on 3-2. Since I'm on the whole Feliz thing I might as well point out that he is now capable of only being a defensive replacement for this team. If I had a dollar for every time he swung at the first pitch...

BTW, I feel it necessary to point out that both A-Fraud and Pettite were both steroid users. I can sleep better at night knowing that our guys are clean. If I here the two absolutely worthless Fow announcers talk about A-Frauds "strength" to go the opposite way one more time, I'm going to throw up. It's pathetic, there all pathetic and it kills me to see these guys playing on the greatest stage of sports, defining its historic moments. Clearly as a fan of baseball has left us all powerless to do anything about it. There is no vindication for honest sports fans when it comes to dishonest $30million dollar athletes.

All that aside, the Yankees are not the better team here. I saw Jayson Werth try to wake the slumping giant last night with his monster (solo) homerun. Apparently it had no affect. If they ever get their heads out from between their **bleep** cheeks, we will have a WS to remember or at least be proud of. I for one, cannot wait for tonight.

Hey TrackToys, I saw Werth hit two , thats a duet or pair ,not a solo. Agree they need to PRODUCE ASAP, who are those guys impersonating the first 4 in the Phils lineup ?

Let's face it - the Yankees are a better team and what team owner with a ton of $ would not buy the best in baseball.? But Philly fans... have you noticed that they Yankees are winning because they're playing like a team - the egos were left at the stadium entrance! Give it a rest!!!

I'm with StormAtC, you can blame Coles all day, but we wouldn't be on his case (as bad) if there was some more offense. Ryan Howard? You gonna show up tonight, buddy?

I am a Phillies fan, and I know that last nights loss hurt. But I also know that the Phillies gave it their best effort. The players know that they did. Their manager knows that they did. They believe in each other and I believe in them.

They're doing it again! Just because Jason, and eventually Carlos, sent out some solo shots doesn't mean everybody should try to go yard. I thought the other way to make good/great starters throw pitches was to make sharp liners through the holes or over the infield. I also thought that the batting was going for more small ball recently. It wasn't happening last night and we'd probably be up 2-1 if they did.

It really looked, at least early in the game, that Cole had his mojo woikin' again. Wrong! I ALSO THOUGHT that the whole staff would be in a go-after frame of mind when it came to dealing with these batters. Wrong! Now we have in Hamels and Martinez two mentally, if not physically, out of shape pitchers.

I was not satisfied with the win over the Rays. Their history before and after is why. I want a win over one of marquis teams of the A.L.: The Yankees, Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers or Angels. I thought the bullpen was the one element that needed improvement towards that end. Now it's the starters, as well as the batting, which is off the wagon in going for the long ball again.

It took the Red Sox 3 years to get back and win another ring. I hope they fulfill HAMELS' promise at least that soon(you know, I'm not sure their fans are satisfied it was the Diamondbacks either).

The only reason that the **bleep** are better is because (as tracktoys said) they are dishonest and a disgrace to baseball. Steriods..Really. That makes you a better team. Let me see.. The Phils play more like a team than any one I have seen. During the play offs **bleep** vs Angles, it was like watching a little league game. All I have to say is that the Phils took it last year and are not going to give up as the reigning WS champions without a fight! GO PHILS!!

Hahahahahaha! I can't believe after reading the above comments that you frustrated Philly fans are bringing up all sorts of excuses like the steroid thing and buying players. Tell me right now what player will not leave a team for more money?? Be serious. It's all about the mightly dollar today. It's plain and simple, your team got beat....PERIOD. Stop making excuses. Your team doesn't need the excuses, they're too good for that. Do you think the Philly team is sitting around saying, "if it wasn't for A-Rod using steroids or that they buy the best players, we would have won." Get real. They lost.

Last time I checked, the World Series is 4 out of 7! So The phillies are down 2-1? Big deal, there is alot more baseball to be played that's for sure. As far as the yanks go..I remember 1 series back in 2004 need I say more? Yanks up3-0 in that series and what happened? I know I don't need to remind yank fans about the biggest collapse ever or do I? Yes Philles can come back and will phillies in 7

This series is far from over. If Blanton can go six and keep them to 3 runs or less and we are patient against Sabathia, we have a serious chance of tying this series up.

FWIW my fellow Phils fans, we should stop all of the senseless complaining about the umpires ball/strike and replay calls. It only gets magnified by a-holes like Hamels who gripe about it to the media. It doesn't help and gives yankee "fans" another reason to have an unwarranted God complex.

For all of the clueless yankees "fans" out there, I am calling you all out. Any championship earned from here on will be highlighted by an *. That's right, your owner, management, players and all of the "fans" have supported and benefited from the steroid culture permeating your organization and MLB. At least J.C. Romero had the right idea by disclosing his intentions before testing positive. He was used by MLB as an example for the new rules. Guys like Pettitte and A-Fraud get away without even a slap on the wrist and are allowed to continue playing. We struggle an entire season with bullpen problems because a key piece in Romero was missing. Our guys adapted and overcame that to get here. What did the yankees do to get to the WS? Open their checkbook and sign the best talent money could buy and steroids could fuel.

Bring it on NY, we wanted this series and as far as I can tell we are still in it.

Tracktoys, the last time I checked there were 9 guys on a team. The Yankees beat you even without ARod being a factor. Get a grip. Oh and by the way, Pettitte did come clean about it. Stop whining. The Phillies players don't need or want your excuses. You got beat and now the series is 2 to 1 in favor of the Yankees. It's 2 good teams battling it out.

I can't believe that this is the same team we saw in the NLCS as well as the playoffs. Leadership starts at the top, and I blame Charlie Manuel for this team's lack of preparedness for one of the biggest venues in worldwide sports. You can't sit there and watch last night's replays and tell me that this team has been practicing and working together to play like this? Hey Manuel, take a look at Joe Girardi........he is able to coach his players through the rough times. If the bats don't prevail, we now have a problem. And we even had a week off to rest everyone's arms. There is no excuse for this.

As for Hamels? He's not even trade bait. No one wants a freakin' whiner on the mound. Hopefully we won't have to have him pitch again. He needs to spend a week at Camp Carlton.

I hope Joe Blanton is good for six, because I think that's all we'll get out of him.

Let's start Lee every other game. He's the only chance we've got.

Ryan Howard is a great player, but we need him to be great in the World Series. You'd think that the money would motivate these people, but I don't think it's always about that.

At the end of the series, win or lose, these players will climb into their Mercedes, Bentleys, Porsches, and BMWs and ride off into the sunset. I guess fame and fortune lessens the severity of a lost World Series. I say if we don't leave our best out there on the field and let the results speak for themselves, we've gypped the loyal fans of Philly.

So, for the 15 million dollar first baseman, you can bury your head in your mitt and walk off like a loser. Same for Hamels. Same for Feliz.

I think it's pretty sad the way the Philly's fans have turned against Cole Hamel. This guy was so instumental in Phialdelphia winnig the series last year. Keep it up. Any athlete who might be considering signing with the Phillies as a fee agent is going to think twice. Ryan Howard is next on the Phillies fans list. Start getting on his case too. He only got you a series win and got you back there this year. Geez what a bunch of babies. I thought Boston fans were bad. There fantastic compared to you whiners. An oh, by the way, as soon as Lee becomes a free agent, he will be appearing in Yankee pinstrips. Wait and see.
