Russakoff Rules
6-5-and-1 More Week; Chest Bumps All Around

Who was that team in midnight green Thursday night? It wasn’t the Philadelphia Eagles. Couldn’t have been. The team I watched ran the ball 40 times and threw it 39. The Eagles wouldn’t do that. They just don’t do that.
But they did. And Hallelujah for that.
Some golden—and incredible—Ray Didinger stats from last night’s postgame show:
This year, when the Eagles run the ball more than their opponent, they are 5-0. Since 2000, when Andy dials up more runs than passes, his teams are 52-10. When he decides to run the ball more than 30 times in a game, the Eagles are 37-5.
Those numbers are staggering.
The staple of Andy’s regime over the past decade has been to run the ball as few times as possible. When fans, writers, or interviewers would challenge him on the unbalance of his playcalling, he’d say he “needs to do a better job,” but come out the next game and throw the ball even more.
It felt to most of us like stubbornness. He was going to throw the ball to set up the run. He knew that’s how it had to work…and all of us who suggested that a play-action pass is less effective when you run the ball just eight times a game were fooling ourselves.
Chris Collinsworth said something very interesting last night. He said he had a conversation with Andy about how little the team runs the ball, and Andy’s response was, “I’m going to fix that tonight.”
And Andy did…shockingly. The Cardinals came out in nickel and dime defenses, Andy/Marty Mornhinweg dialed up run after run, and the Eagles jammed the ball down a team’s throat.
It seemed so simple. So easy.
And perhaps that’s the rub. Andy said another interesting thing in his postgame press conference when he was asked why he ran the ball so much last night as opposed to the previous few games.
He said, “Well, the run game worked. We were gaining positive yards on it.”
That seems to miss the point. That seems to connote that if they began the game slow on the ground, Reid wouldn’t have run the ball as much. (By the way, why doesn’t he ever apply that same philosophy to the passing game.)
If you look at the statistics Didinger cited, there is no caveat for “successful” running plays. Didinger isn’t just counting positive rushing attempts.
The Eagles are 5-0 this year when they run the ball more than their opponent—whether or not they do it well. They are 52-10 since 2000, when they outrun their opponent—no matter how many ground yards they gain. They are 37-5 when they run the ball more than 30 times—regardless of success.
Before the game, Brian Westbrook said, "I honestly believe that if we were a little more patient with the running game, then we'd be more effective."
This isn’t that hard. Brian Westbrook gets it. You fans get it. Heck, even I get it.
The Eagles playoff chances are not good. They probably need to win out—their remaining schedule includes the Giants, Skins, Cowboys, and Browns—to make the postseason.
No matter how well the Birds play, that’s a tall order. But if Andy can keep his offense more in balance, and keep opposing defenses guessing, the task is achievable.
The NFL isn’t that good.
Bonus DVD Extras
Did anyone notice Donovan’s postgame suit?!? The cat looked like John Witherspoon out there. He just needs some mushroom suspenders and a mushroom belt—you got to coordinate!
Andy Reid on DeSean Jackson’s post-TD celebratory chest bump: “I thought a moth hit me.”
Andy really knows how to handle his players, doesn't he? He’ll take complete credit for turning McNabb around (by saying he takes no credit) but what about Lito Sheppard? He was a Pro Bowl corner. But now, Andy has wrecked his confidence to the point where he couldn’t cover me. And I’ve torn both Achilles’ tendons.
After watching that Detroit-Tennessee game, I’m convinced. The NFL needs to adopt relegation. It’s the only way to handle that level of decrepitness.
In Donovan’s postgame NFL network interview, the interviewer was reciting his stats: 27-of-39 for 260 yards, 4 TDs, and 0 INTs. Donovan’s response, “Guess I’m pretty good.”
Were you shocked by the Eagles performance on Thanksgiving? Can they still make the playoffs? Sound off here.

I do not see them winning out.If they played like they did last night they would beat anybody in the league. They screwed up by not beating the Bengals and losing to Dallas,Chicago, blowing a 17-0 lead at home to Washington, etc. If they beat the Giants and Redskins on the road they have a great shot. They won three divisional games in a row on the road a couple years ago so it is possible. But those teams have gotten better since then.If they win out they will get in.But I think thats the only way. When their backs are against the wall they usually show up.Don't get your hopes up even if they beat the Giants.Fri, 28 Nov 2008 17:59:25 GMT | gdtrfb05

i was not surprised by the outcome of the game. When given the right game plan this Eagles team is capable of the same kind of games we witnessed last night. Once a year Andy Reid seems to learn from his mistakes and comes up with balanced offense and plays that match the talents of his players. Nearly equal run/pass, and Donovan scrambling. The only problem is Andy continues to return to the norm and revert to a lopsided pass first mentality. Donovan is once again restricted to pocket passing. Andy's game plans nearly always eliminate two of his most effective weapons i.e.-Donovans ability to run. And the use of his running backs as running backs.Fri, 28 Nov 2008 18:47:45 GMT | Ghostseeker

Lee, No I wasn't shocked that the Eagles played so well. I knew if Andy called the run often and early the the Eagles increase their chance to BEAT ANY TEAM.I feel that the Eagles were the toughest opponent and played against a tough opponent on T-Day. Dallas played the Seahawks and Tennessee played the Lions. How lop-sided of a matchup for those teams. Wow Dallas fans, be happy for winning against a corny team on T-Day like yall do every year; besides when you'll play the 5-0 on T-day Philadelphia Eagles.
I hope the NFL schedules more teams beside the Lions and Cowboys to play on T-Day. As for those cowboys, their schedule is about to make themor break them. Their next four games are against the Steelers, Giants, Baltimore, and finally Philly. BY THE TIME THE GIRLS ARRIVE IN PHILLY THEY WILL BE ALL BANGED UP FROM THE OTHER GREAT DEFENSES.
I predict the girls to loose 4 straight. They're not playing teams that are the caliber of the Seahawks. Romo will get hit often for another month and I'm sure he will make the mistakes he makes every December. ROMO IS NOT A DECEMBER QB ESPECIALLY AGAINST TEAMS LIKE THE ONES THAT THEY WILL FACE STARTING DEC. 4th.
My statements leads to this: THE EAGLES STILL ARE ALIVE. IF THE PLAY CALLING STAYS LIKE WE WITNESSED AGAINST THE CARDINALS, THEN THEY WILL WIN THE NEXT FOUR AND MAKE THE WILDCARD. I remember what the Giants did last year and the Eagles can do it too. We have to just take it one gane at a time.
I know all you Eagles haters will doubt it and say oh McNabb this and Andy that; but historically the Eagles play great December football. Be prepared for the unexpected HATERS.

HEY SPOPS,You have no idea what you are talking about. McNabb shows up week in and week out. Yeah he threw up in the Superbowl, but that's not why they lost it. Think back to Westbrook being wideopen across the Middle and McNabb drilled a pass in his numbers and he dropped it. If Westbrook catches that ball the Eagles would have a ring. Furthermore, The Eagles started great this season because Curtis and Brown were hurt. All the games that McNabb looked bad in had some commen elements. They were, Andy's unbalanced play calling and bad situational play calls, Curtis not being able to get open and messing up the timing, Brown not being able to catch when he finally gets open, and McNabb just having two of the worst weeks of gameplay ever. Other than that SPOPS, McNabb has kept the Eagles in every game even when they lost to B-more.
SPOPS before you ever blog again don't just have an opinion because you follow sports news on ESPN or your local news. You should try to watch the games, more than one open-mindedly. As you watch these games ask quetions to yourself about whatever it is that doesn't work or seem right, then search for the answer logically in your mind or use other games to answer the questions. With the data that you collected during the games, you actually will be able to comment on a blog and sound like you know what you are talking about. RIGHT NOW SPOPS, YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE GAME OF FOOTBALL. You are just another one of those drama-kings. BYE BYE HATER.

Let's remember, folks, this WAS the Arizona Cardinals they were playing. NFC West teams are 0-14 against NFC East teams. Kurt Warner is a fraud. I don't care what his stats are; he looked like the QB that he is last night. If they do to the Giants what they did to the Cardinals, I will be impressed. But don't get your hopes up. Andy Reid is a big, fat tub of goo who makes idiotic calls, has no idea what clock management means, and should have resigned after the debacles in Cincinatti & Baltimore. Let's not forget who got us to 6-5&1.Fri, 28 Nov 2008 20:53:10 GMT | jmr1966

Lehigh villian, two questions for you:1. are you like 1o years old?
2. weren't you commenting the last couple weeks how bad the Eagles were and would never make the playoffs?
now you are telling everyone what the future won-loss record of other teams will be for the balance of the season? Perhaps you are just John Kerry doing flip flops.
This is a big kid forum, so go expound on your extraordinary football knowledge to the playground or other forum where you might actually convince someone you think you know what you are spouting on about

I was shocked. And, no I do not think that they will make the playoffs, BUT I would love for them to play well enough to beat 2 of 3 NFC East teams, and for McNabb to play well so that people will stop dreaming that Kolb is the answer to all their problems. Go ahead and get rid of McNabb and Philly will realize how difficult it is to find a pro-bowl quarterback. Andy needs to resign. Sadly, it will not happen. IF and thats a big If. Andy Reid would play the game to win and not play it as he thinks he should (refer to stubbornness quote) And he did all of this at the beginning of the season there would be no doubt in my mind we would be playoff bound. We desperately need the running game (since McNabb is too old shouldn't and couldn't be a factor on a scramble like the good old days when he drove defenses nuts). Andy WAKE UP or bow out because your getting to old and have more to worry about back at home. I was praying that the Phillies winning the World Series would light a fire under some Pa. butts, but I guess it hasn't. Last thing has nothing to do with Andy, well not much but where is our vaunted blitzing defenses that kept quaterbacks so befuddled that we controlled the game. Anyway I love my eagles, lets finish the year off with our heads up at least, and act like were playing the game to win and not the millions in the pocket.Sat, 29 Nov 2008 02:11:21 GMT | Titan

How does that song go???? Too much too little TOO LATE!!That's what I think about Thursday's win. If the Eagles played that good on Thursday, why couldn't they have played that good all season long?? It's just one win so don't get all excited like they are going to the superbowl.
Let's see how they do on this Sunday's game. I think the Cardinals were a little confused cause the Eagles looked like they were in a different color jersey, just like the game where they wore those blue and yellow jerseys. I am going to wait a couple more games to see what goes on before I count them out.

The Eagles need to let Kyle Kolb get some playing time and let this season go .They will get a good draft pick for next season and it will give the young quarterback some time to get ready for next year.I think that McNabb needs to disappear and see what we can possibly get for him.The fans don't want him back so maybe we should look to draft a new quarterback and start to build the team chemistry up and change the look of the team and how the fans feel about them.Mon, 01 Dec 2008 20:48:59 GMT | kmark
