History's Financial Scandals
Stanford Financial Group of Companies
Despite claiming to have made double-digit returns between 1993 and 2005, the Stanford Financial Group of Companies’ annual returns hadn't reached 10 percent since 1994, according to recent court papers. Texas billionaire R. Allen Stanford pleaded not guilty in June 2009 to charges he cheated investors out of $7 billion as part of a massive investment scam. He is currently in a Texas jail; a U.S. judge yesterday stayed her decision to grant a $500,000 bond because the U.S. government plans to appeal. (AP Photo/Andres Leighton)
