You’d be surprised what a tightened belt here and there can do. Your car's routine, factory-scheduled maintenance checks improve the way it performs overall, including its fuel efficiency. Have your car serviced at regular intervals -- and don't ignore any dashboard warning lights that come on in between.

10. Don’t Idle Some experts suggest that if you’re making a stop that will last longer than 60 seconds, you should turn off your engine. The jury is still out on this one, but many say that it takes a set amount of fuel to start your engine while it takes a greater amount of fuel to keep it running over an extended period of time. If you’re looking to get to your destination in one piece -- and save money on gas along the way -- turn your music down. It will help you concentrate, drive steadily and conserve whatever is left in your tank.

Try filling up in the early morning or late evening when gas is likely to be less dense, thereby providing you with greater volumes.
