10 Ways to Save on Gas

Going to work? Going to play? Do it with friends. Piling into a vehicle with three friends cuts your cumulative gas costs by 75 percent. Whether you’re going to work or just going to dinner, consider the extra savings if you and a few neighbors go together and split the travel costs.

10. Don’t Idle Some experts suggest that if you’re making a stop that will last longer than 60 seconds, you should turn off your engine. The jury is still out on this one, but many say that it takes a set amount of fuel to start your engine while it takes a greater amount of fuel to keep it running over an extended period of time. 9. Turn the Musi... This may sound strange, but think about it: It is rare to speed and not have a great song blasting to help you race through the streets. If you’re looking to get to your destination in one piece -- and save money on gas along the way -- turn your music down. It will help you concentrate, drive steadily and conserve whatever is left in your tank.
8. Buy Gas Late ... Fuel, like many substances, can be more or less dense depending on its temperature. On a hot summer afternoon, gas will probably be denser, which isn't good for your wallet. Try filling up in the early morning or late evening when gas is likely to be less dense, thereby providing you with greater volumes.
7. Tighten the F... This tip might sound like a no-brainer… but many of us are preoccupied while at the gas station. Next time you pump, make sure your fuel cap is screwed on tightly to prevent gas evaporation. Don’t let your money float away.
6. Combine Trips Do you really need that pint of ice cream today? Is the dry cleaner you use near your job? These are the kinds of things you should consider before picking up your car keys and heading out the door. If you can combine all of your errands in a single trip, you'll eliminate starts and stops, and save fuel in the process.

And be sure to always go to your farthest destination first. This tactic should reduce the total distance you travel, which means you'll use less gas.

The age-old way of driving around until you find the cheapest isn’t efficient, and actually wastes even more gas. Shop around in advance to find a happy price point, then fill’er up.

Your car's routine, factory-scheduled maintenance checks improve the way it performs overall, including its fuel efficiency. Have your car serviced at regular intervals -- and don't ignore any dashboard warning lights that come on in between.
