CAS rejects protest of Danes' 49er sailing gold

BEIJING (AP) The Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed Denmark to keep its gold medal from 49er skiff sailing Saturday by dismissing a protest from Spain and Italy over the Danes completing the Olympic final in a boat borrowed from the Croatian team.

The Danish crew of Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen were awarded the gold medal on Monday in the 49er skiff class, but that medal was appealed by Spain and fourth-place Italy. Germany took bronze.

The Danish crew's mast broke during practice ahead of the start in the gold-medal final. They got back into port and borrowed a boat from a Croatian crew - with nationality markings CRO - and managed to get across the start line just before the deadline. They finished seventh in the race, good enough to top the overall points standings.
