Country Stars Targeting Taylor?

Is a Taylor Swift backlash afoot?

Pop-country got bashed by country legend George Jones in an interview he gave the AP this week. Jones told the AP that he thinks pop-country stars like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift are good, but "they've stolen our identity." He feels that the new crop of country stars needs to invent a new name for whatever you want to call their music, but it's certainly not traditional country in his opinion.

Fair enough, but it's safe to say that the likes of Underwood, Swift, and Chesney have tapped into something that country's old guard hasn't lately: new fans. Jones finishes his interview by bashing rap music, something that would've endeared him to rock disciples, say, 15 years ago. Now he just seems out of touch.

Underwood herself says she isn't too keen on the pop-country label either. She wants country to be a big tent where artists both old and new can come together and fans can discover all of them. She told the AP that she'd rather call her kind of music "contemporary," which seems to be more of a marketing ploy than to say anything about the sound of young country music.

Frankly, it makes me think of music suitable for a dentist's office.

All of it smacks of backlash against Taylor Swift, whose rise to fame has eclipsed the likes of Underwood, leading NY Times critic Jon Caramanica to wonder if Underwood hadn't prematurely aged against the backdrop of the insouciant Swift. That the ex-'Idol' star would try to distance herself from Swift is no surprise, but why not abdicate the tween audience and play up her sexuality in a bid to be the second coming of Dolly Parton? She has the looks, charm, and songs to pull it off!

It would be foolish for country music to start feuding like so many Hatfields and McCoys at a time when radio promotion is less a part of the music landscape than any time in the past. Country needs to rely on its young stars to drag it from the depths of being music solely for red staters. Country music would be well served by getting out of politics altogether and get back to partying.

Country music has seen dark days in the past. If memory serves, country bounced back from synth-drenched '80s tracks by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, to fun-loving tunes by the likes of Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, and Garth Brooks. It's time to embrace pop-country and expose new fans to the kind of music they want playing at their prom. Is it so bad to want to have fun?

Personally, I think Taylor needs to get vocal lessons. Everytime I hear her sing, I hear a little girl. My 8 year old can carry a tune better than she can. When she appeared with Def Lepard on Crossroads, I thought she was a disgrace to all genres of music. I'm a huge Lepard fan, but felt sorry for them, having to perform with her! Bouncing around and swinging that head of hair, did nothing to impress me! She comes off, being "Miss Innocent". Sorry, no one is that squeaky clean!

I like Taylor and I Love Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler. I have seen the Greats of Jones, Twitty,Strait,Merle and I LOVED Them all.
But I agree we should get back to loving what'ever music we like and just get along.
I don't have children and alot of the young ones seem to Like Swift because they can relate to her music.
Where us older ones do the same with Jones, Merle,Twitty. We are all YOUNG once.
So Please Just Love who you Love and Support Who you want to Support. There is worst things going on in This Big Old World to fight about like "THE WAR"

It's not too nice to be bashing young musicians...To each his own on musical taste! I love music, period, but I do have a few favorites...As we all do.

I can understand why so many young people like Taylor Swift. It is obvious they have no clue about good music. I have no idea why she has "made it". I mean really. She is one who will not last long. Almost sure of that.. Her voice is so whiny. i have to change channels everytime hre songs are played.

I always find it ironic that older artist from years ago will come out and try to say some type of music is not what is labeled. In this case country.

I wonder how some of the old timers felt back in the days of strings and the Nashville Sound and the play of George and Tammy and how it was not country like the old Carter Family, or Jimmy Reeves, maybe even go back to Uncle Dave Macon.

Lets see some of these same generation of hit makers where coming big when Dwight first came out and could not get a record deal for he was too country. Had to come in with the punk and alternative music scene from LA.

Music changes and little to any of the music for the day, be it now, 20 years ago or 40 years from now, will ever be considered real “Put your Label Here” by the old timers much as those old-timers seniors considered theirs at the time.

It is music and people need to quit putting labels on everything, especially since those labels change so often. Just play what you like and be happy for those that bring music to their fans, some that can even do so without Pro Tools and electronics!!

It amazes me that even in something as unimportant as someones music preferrences people get into such a dither. Taylor Swift appeals to some, George Jones appeals to others. Country music got a big shot in the arm with the likes of Shania Twain(whom Jones also didn't like and everyone was agahst when she bared her bellybutton) and it has more appeal for mainstream listeners now because it is more diversified. George Jones was a drunk who didn't show up for his concerts, so he has no room to criticize anyone. There is plenty of room in the industry for Taylor, Carrie, Reba etc. and even George Jones.

I am not a country music fan at all, however modern country like Taylor Swift I like. If country artists insist on their music retaining the same old twang that it had back in the day, then country music is over! It's the new country music and like it or not the new country artists that will lead the way!
Taylor Swift is a fantastic artist!

I think it was Jimmy Rodgers that said, "That Buck Owens and George Jones are gonna ruin country music." Or was that Elvis?

She is young, she is sweet, she does not get in trouble, she
writes her own songs, I love her songs, for a 63 year old,
quite an accomplishment, leave the poor girl alone. Those that
do not like her or her style, or her songs, you do not have to listen to her. Remember Johnny Cash, he was not liked either and I like this new kind of Country Rock just like
I like Kenney Chesney, Reba McIntyre; Dolly Parton;
Garth Brooks and a lot of other Country stars. No she will not fade with time she will get older and the music she writes
will change.
time just like they predicted

Well...this is a good one. We all have our own personal tastes in music as well as our taste in clothes, and food. I do not buy her music, and do not listen to it, personally. Why, because it is my choice. It is not what I, listen to. If you do not like her music, or like her...why bother with it, and open your mouth and talk bad about her? She is making an honest living. I know she can sing, and really sings better than I do. I know she sings better than anyone on this blog making there marks against her....why...because they are on here, rather than the music charts! She, brings the younger crowd into the country spectrum so they can get a taste of country charm. I grew up with the oldies, the "classic" country and I am proud of it, and I am also proud of the younger crowd as well. No matter what these young ones do, to some, or most-it is never good enough. There not out selling drugs, or endorsing it, like "most" rap stars. I am tired of all the b.s. against all the younger stars, just because some of you did not have the talent, they do. You are pathetic bloggers, because you are not on the charts, or the record labels! Do i agree with Jones for his comments, no...but-I will to continue listening to his music, old-and new. I will let my children and grand-children listen to the younger country music..."i" just don't prefer it.
Remember...a "younger" country star come out with a song, "We are young Country"..."we are the pride".....remember the words to that song...and it was not a few years ago!! Hank Williams Jr.!!
My Momma taught me, that if you do not have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all...and why...
....because..."it is better to be silent and thought a fool-rather speak up and remove all doubt"!
God Bless everyone!

While I am not a fan of the twangy country music of days ago (George Jones), I also do not like the pop country and I am from Nashville. I do not like to hear Taylor Swift sing, I cringe everytime I see her perform or hear her on the radio. Therefore, I turn the station. I don't think there is anything about Taylor Swift's music that should be played on country radio. I think Carrie Underwood has a voice that can compete with anyone. However, I do think her new song, Cowboy Casanova, makes me feel like she is trying to be Gwen Stefani. Who I like, but on pop radio, not country. I do wish them all the best of luck!

I am a mother of an 11 year old daughter. We had the honor of attending the Taylor Swift/Keith Urban concert. To all of you out there that say that she can not sing, you are wrong. She brought tears to our eyes. God gave her a special gift and she is using it to entertain us. How can anyone be so critical gods gifts? Boy are you all so perfect? Please let her be and if you don't like her sound or the Pop Country sound, just change your station. There are millions out there that love it and our children are hearing great words. I am sick of all the crap that is out there that they call music. Let the Taylors, Myles and Carries in so our children can sing songs that are appropriate!!!
Thank you for your music Taylor!!! You are truely a gift from God!!!

I always love how people say my kid can sing better or whatever. Well the last time i checked your kid wasn't making millions of dollar a year. This girl writes, sings and designs her own shows. She has talent and well, jealousy is just a normal reaction to that.
As far as George Jones goes we had the same issue with Faith Hill, Shania Twain and Martina McBride a few years ago. Remember Alan Jackson and George Strait's song Murder on Music Row? In a year or two someone will come a long that will change country music again and it will start over again.
Heck I remember when everyone said Reba McEntire was killing country music. Boy did she prove them wrong.

I think Taylor Swift is highly overrated. I also thought she was an embarassment singing live with Def Leppard. She can barely carry a tune. Is over half America deaf??? Carrie Underwood has true talent and sounds just as beautiful live as she does on her cd's. Not to mention, Taylor just looks plain gawky on stage. I don't get it. What happened to being able to carry a tune?
