There are probably many of you wondering what becomes of the Beatles music now that Michael Jackson has passed. Some of you may have heard that Michael Jackson bequeathed the Beatles catalogue to Paul McCartney. That would be wrong.
Paul writes on his website:
"Some time ago, the media came up with the idea that Michael Jackson was going to leave his share in the Beatles songs to me in his will which was completely made up and something I didn’t believe for a second."He goes on to add that he is not devastated that this myth didn't materialize and that he and Jackson were still on friendly terms and that he has 'fond memories of [their] time together.'
What Do You Think? Should Michael have given the Beatles songs back to Paul? Click here to commen |

Yes, I think Michael Jackson should have given it back the Beatles songs to Paul McCartney.Wed, 08 Jul 2009 22:03:28 GMT | ClaudineE

This is a tough one. Musically I think it would've been the right thing to give it back to McCartney, and I can remember the stories of how upset he was when it was sold to Jackson. However, financially, it's beneficial to keep it for his children.Wed, 08 Jul 2009 22:07:01 GMT | badd_bonz

too bad they lost the portfolio in the beginning now that Paul can afford it - MAYBE he could buy it from the estate!Wed, 08 Jul 2009 22:27:02 GMT | chrissygil

Sir Paul should break open his piggy bank and buy the music catalog back at the fair market price. He would be leaving his children a priceless treasure and also help Michael Jackson's children future financial security.Wed, 08 Jul 2009 23:01:06 GMT | chihuahuagal

I am a big Beatle fan, but Paul had his chance to purchase the catalog , but didnt want to step on Yoko's toes ....so in life you snoose you loose ... AND THATS HOW IT GOES.The songs now belong to the Jackson Estate ...as long as paul can sing them live in concert im o.k.Thu, 09 Jul 2009 00:04:38 GMT | seventh beetle

Why should he? It was a business transaction and to just give it away would be stupid. Would the Paul give away music he acquired in a business venture? No way, and neither would anyone else so why should we want Michael Jackson to give the catalogue away? This is a dumb questions that the media came up with.Thu, 09 Jul 2009 00:23:06 GMT | mbde

Ideally, the songs should be sold back to Paul with the money going into a Trust Fund for Michael's kids.Thu, 09 Jul 2009 00:35:53 GMT | jimhope

i've never heard Paul say that he wanted them. But i do think that he should be given first choice, after all most of the songs were written by Lennon/McCartney.Thu, 09 Jul 2009 01:01:23 GMT | nursesue

We all know Paul wrote them with John. They will always be Beatles songs. It doesn't matter today who owns what. As long as we can still enjoy. Isn't that what music is suppose to do? I'm so glad we still have Paul. Michael Jackson's death was inevitable. He really had no where else to go within himself.Thu, 09 Jul 2009 01:28:41 GMT | 9034-50

The catalog was not MJ's to give or sell to anyone. He owned it along with Sony/ATV Music. But MJ was using his portion of the catalog as collateral on a loan from Sony/ATV. You can bet that Sony/ATV is not going to sell that catalog....ever. It is way too profitable. MJ's estate will own part of the catalog along with SATV, but Sony/ATV controls it.Message Edited by Rockman59 on 07-08-2009 10:06 PM

Paul could always afford it. The Lennon/Macca songs were originally owned by Northern Songs Lmtd. When they decided to sell the catalog they did it with sealed bids. The story goes that MJ found out how much Paul was going to bid and topped that by a few bucks. Contrary to what Paul says he was furious when he found out that he was not the high bidder. Yoko or none of the other Beatles had anything to do with the deal.

No I do not. I think it was sad that it was purchased by Jackson to begin with but business is business. Maca should have had the thing tied up himself so no one could have gotten the rights and being advised well, Jackson acquired. Good business move.Thu, 09 Jul 2009 02:49:34 GMT | msmacooey
