Mickey Mouse's Makeover

It has been 81 years since Mickey Mouse was first unveiled to the public in "Steamboat Willie" at the Colony Theatre in New York City. Since then, he has undergone only slight cosmetic changes -- a more pear-shaped body and added pupils in the 1930's, three-dimensional ears in the 1940's, to name a few. But most of these changes were short-lived, as the Mickey Mouse of today appears very much as he did on his first hello. But now, in late 2009, the idea of a Mickey makeover is actually being entertained. The Walt Disney Co., after years of keeping Mickey in a timeless, changeless capsule, is re-imagining him for the future, according to Brooks Barnes' New York Times article.

Naturally, the edgier Mickey Mouse of the 21st century will debut not behind velvet ropes or Broadway curtains but in a video game on the television screen. In fact, his first introduction will be next year in a Nintendo Wii game called Epic Mickey, in which he will act cantankerous, cunning and heroic, according to Barnes.
On a larger scale, Disney will also embark on a journey to tweak and fine-tune Mickey's personality and image across the board, from the way he appears in Disney theme parks and on the Disney Channel to how he interacts with kids on the Web. News of his development was made public shortly after Disney won approval from the Chinese government of its bid to open a new park in Shanghai. However, there has been no confirmed correlation between the two announcements.
In other news, Disney's more forward-looking approach also involves the Apple-ifying of its retail stores. It has been rumored that the company tapped none other thanSteve Jobs himself for consulting advice on how to improve the shopping experience of Disney stores.
What to expect in the near future: A magical, theme park-like transformation. Think employees carrying kiosks for mobile checkout, karaoke and touchscreen stations featuring recent films and "live chats" with Disney stars.
Over the next five years, analysts estimate that Disney will spend about $1 million per store to redecorate, reorganize and install interactive technology, according to another New York Times article by Brooks Barnes. These changes are expected to play a role in many of the company's 340 stores in the U.S. and Europe, as well as 125 new U.S. locations slated to open at midnight on Black Friday.
What do you think about Mickey's makeover? Are you looking forward to the new shopping experience at Disney stores? Share your thoughts here.

Why mess with a classic? Mickey Mouse is an American icon. Would you change the Satue of Liberty? Remeber what happened with "New Coke"? In an ever changing world, I think some things should remain the same. Please don't change our Mickey!! Or Minnie, Donald, Goofy, or even Pluto!Thu, 19 Nov 2009 01:42:28 GMT | venis

I certainly agree with "venis." Some things should never be meddled with. I know companies need to update products, etc., but there are some things that are embedded in our hearts and minds. Sometimes we really need to think things like, "What would Walt do," or in Boeing's case (in screwing up a few things), "what would Bill Boeing do?" Mickey is Mickey. He cannot and should not ever be changed.Thu, 19 Nov 2009 01:55:30 GMT | juppen

I certainly agee with venis and juppen! Why mess with perfection?!? Generations of people young and old have looked to Disney as the source of all things good and fun AND Mickey as the ambassador to that world of fun. Please don't spoil it by making him edgy, cantankerous, and tempermental! We get enough of that every day from everywhere and everyone else.Thu, 19 Nov 2009 02:41:49 GMT | popi2amiah

Why would Disney want to change their flagship character? We go to Disney almost every year, and my kids absolutely love Mickey. I am not someone who resists change at all, but I don't understand why in a world full of impatient, temperamental people you would want to change Mickey from the friendly, kind hearted character that the kids know and love.Thu, 19 Nov 2009 02:59:40 GMT | NoWalMart

PEASE DO NOT CHANGE MICKEY!!!!!! He is an icon, you do not mess with them!! He is only the stable thing in our life right now and a good role model for our children and grandchildren. Why would you want to make him a villian, cankerous old fella??Thu, 19 Nov 2009 03:03:37 GMT | pquinn

What's wrong with Corp America? You all gone nuts!!! Can't build cars, don't ask what folks they want, sell them stuff made in China and NOW!!!! you take an American icon and make him a grumpy old man. Just what we need to teach our children, how to be cranky and mean spirited!!! Take the money and build a better America, one that values the family!!Thu, 19 Nov 2009 03:10:47 GMT | rdrobin12

Nobody on this planet loves Disney World more then me. However, I do not always agree with what Disney does and I get upset when they do something stupid. Changing Mickey's appearance and personality would be one of those stupid things. Putting another park in China when the first one is not doing well is another mistake I believe. Would Michael Eisner or Walt Disney do this? I remember when Coke changed their formula. What a disaster ! ! ! This would be the same thing. I think Disney should concentrate on more important things such as expanding their Floriday theme park and adding more attractions.Thu, 19 Nov 2009 03:20:51 GMT | mouseketeer

A glossary for corporate America "building the brand" for a "younger, hipper demographic":Re-imagine: v. - "f**k it up". Example - "Let's take a classic movie and re-imagine it!"
Edgy: adj. - annoying. Example - "Why don't we re-imagine Mickey Mouse? Then he'll be totally edgy!"
Reason enough why I'll never waste a dime on anything that has either of these words in the description. What's next, a gigantic boob job for Minnie Mouse?

I LOVE DISNEY SO MUCH I WANT TO BE BURIED IN A THEME PARK WHEN I DIE. IT WOULD BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST BLUNDERS IN THE CORPORATE WORLD HISTORY TO CHANGE MICKEY'S IMAGE. WHY WOULD YOU EVEN CONSIDER CHANGING YOUR CORPORATE LOGO BY WHICH PEOPLE ASSOCIATE YOUR COMPANY WITH AND DIDN'T YOU LEARN FROM PAST HISTORY THAT THOSE CHANGES WERE SHORT-LIVED BECAUSE IT WAS WRONG TO MESS MICKEY AT ALL.THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER THINGS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED AND RULE NUMBER ONE IN BUSINESS IS IF SOMETHING IS WORKING DON'T MESS WITH IT.
LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS, DON'T SCREW AROUND WITH MICKEY OR BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN TO YOUR COMPANY.
FINALLY LOOK AT OTHER COMPANY MASCOTS/LOGOS THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME LIKE, AUNT JEMIMAH'S SYRUP, LUCKY CHARM'S CEREAL, ORVILLE REDENBACHER POPCORN,
RONALD MCDONALD, AND MR. CLEAN BLEACH, THEY ARE STILL THE SAME AS WHEN THEY WERE INTRODUCED TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. STOP, RETHINK , AND RECONSIDER YOUR IDEA TO MAKE A CHANGE TO MICKEY'S IMAGE YOU WON'T BE SORRY YOU LISTENED TO YOUR CUSTOMER'S OUTCRY NOT TO MAKE THE CHANGES PLEASE.

Mickey Mouse may be only a cartoon, but he is someone our kids look up to, and now you want to make him cantankerous???? Great, give the kids another reason to act up, cuz Mickey does it too! NOT!@! I agree, why mess with a sure thing? Maybe tweak his looks, tho I don't know how, but don't mess with his personality!! LEAVE MICKEY ALONE!!!!!Thu, 19 Nov 2009 11:05:34 GMT | tdybr1956

Walt Disney believed in the family and family entertainment. I believe he'd be vomiting in his grave at this idea. Some traditions you don't mess with. And Mickey is the cornerstone that made Disney happen. Change Mickey? Parents and children need to know that Mickey is the same: yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Change for change sake is a lousy idea. Did you hate your childhood that badly?Doug

Mickey Mouse....don't mess with success....I am going to Disneyland in a couple of weeks ....and knowing that this Icon of generations is going to be changed. I am sure Mr. Disney is looking down from above and wondering " What in the WORLD are you doing!"I understand business, and Mickey does have to be marketable,I guess because I am of the original Mickey Mouse Club era this is just unthinkable.

and we wonder whats wrong with todays youth! why would you change a historical image for children thats good and turn it into a bad image for children to follow and misbehave. oh i know so we will have something to report in the news in years to come about how Mickeys image has changed the way children are acting in todays world! When Disney died so did the Small World! Sorry Mickey I will always remember you just the way you were OriginalThu, 19 Nov 2009 15:47:22 GMT | ilovemywife
