For What It's Worth

iPhone Named 'Worst in the World'

If you don't currently own an iPhone, forget everything you've heard about how wonderful it is. Well, maybe not everything. But according to CNET UK's Flora Graham, the iPhone has a collection of dirty little secrets that tend to get overshadowed in the mainstream media and the high-school cafeteria (probably because you look 10 times cooler if you're holding one regardless).

Most of these inconvenient truths are far-from-secret to those who actually own Apple Corp.'s deified device. But as CNNMoney's Philip Elmer DeWitt reported earlier this week, Graham's scathing review brings many of them to light -- all just five months after she named it the "world's best touchscreen phone."

The British Are Coming

Among Graham's remarks reported by DeWitt at CNNMoney.com:
"Say what? Call quality on the iPhone is pathetic, and it's mostly because of the tiny speaker. It has to be aligned with your ear canal with the accuracy of a laser-guided ninja doing cataract surgery, or else the volume cuts down to nothing as the sound waves bounce uselessly around your ear shells."
Bollocks. That's rough. In fairness, though she calls the iPhone "rubbish" when it comes to making calls, Graham suggests that just about all of the glowing praise heaped on the device from all corners of the earth still seems warranted. From DeWitt's article at CNNMoney.com, "Brit Blog Names iPhone 'World's Worst'":
"The iPhone sucks — so what? If the iPhone is inaudible, unconnected, on fire and out of battery, why is the thing so popular? The fact is, although the iPhone is the worst phone in the world, it's the best handheld computer there is."
So why the change of heart at CNET UK? Your guess is as good as ours.

In This Corner...

But one thing we do know is that the timing couldn't be better if you take Graham's words to heart. That's because across the pond in the U.S., America's leading cell carrier Verizon Wireless introduced its latest attempt to dent rival carrier AT&T's growing iPhone-fueled momentum with this morning's 12:00 a.m. launch of its Motorola Droid.

The chances that the Droid will steal significant thunder from the colossus that is the iPhone are charting somewhere between slim and none… with slim having just left town. That said, amid the backdrop of Graham's CNET UK piece that called clear attention to the fact that Steve Jobs' creation is far from infallible, users certainly have reasons to give the Droid some consideration.

Some reviews echo that sentiment. A quick sampling:There's Always a Catch

But before you rush out to your local Verizon store to snag the Droid -- consider this: The carrier plans to alter its service agreement, effective November 15. The bottom line, as reported by Christian Zibreg at Geek.com ("The Droid Tax: Verizon Doubles Early Termination Fee to $350"): Beware the nasty $350 early termination fee.

We fully recognize the need for early termination fees. After all, those charges exist as a means for subsidizing the devices we all carry. Without them, there'd be no new "free" or $99 handsets for most of us every 24 months or so.

But Verizon's approach and timing (there's that word again) seem especially heavy-handed. The carrier's plans to close a potential loophole for those looking to flip their hardware on eBay for a quick profit could end up having real consequences for its otherwise loyal customers. And that's far from cool…

What do you think of the ongoing cellphone wars? Is the iPhone overrated… or is it truly the best thing since sliced bread? Share your thoughts.

I like my iPhone. It's not perfect, but it's the best thing going right now and I expect the next gen model to raise the bar even higher. The Droid will appeal to those on Verizon, but it's not nearly enough for me to consider switching. Oh, and they can take their $350 early term fee and stick it.

I love my iphone. I dropped in the lake this summer - it spent 15 minutes submerged until I could find it. After immediately powering it down and completely drying it out - I powered it on and it works!! How many phones can do that?

I was a died in the wool Verizon customer since they were PacTel, Air Touch, etc. since '92. About 6 months ago we went to our Verizon dealer looking for a new phone b/c we hated our phones. We wanted to upgrade to smart phones (blk berries) & was told that we couldn't b/c we weren't at the end of our contract. I told them we'd extend it but they said that we couldn't and that we could get the BBs but it would be at the FULL retail price. I was stunned! After all of the years that we'd been loyal customers I was done. To make sure that I hadn't mis-heard her, I asked if there was anything we could do to get different phones before our contract was up & she told me again NO, unless we wanted to pay FULL retail for 2 blackberries. I thanked her for her time, and as my husband & I got into our car, we decided that we were calling AT&T the next morning & ordering the new 3GS that was about to debut. A few days later we had our iPhones & we've been thrilled ever since. We never thought we'd use a fraction of the features, & now 5 months later we don't know what we'd do without them. The iPhone 3GS ROCKS!!!

who cares what the fees are for early termination. if you are purchasing a phone for your personal use, why are you gonna cancel anyway, so sign the contract, get your inexpensive phone and shut up.

The iPhone is everything Apple promises. I purchased one the first month they were out, and I could not run my business today without one. The fool who talks about not being able to hear without laser guided accuracy tells me either he has never owned an iPhone and/or is being paid by another company to say this. The need to have so-called perfect alignment to hear is just not true. How pathetic.

What's the deal with titling this article "iPhone NAMED 'Worst in the World'"? One bad review of the phone aspect does not translate into its being NAMED something.

Beside that fact, she was clearly being provocative with that assessment so that people would take note of her rave review that the iPhone is "the best hand-held computer there is". So...why not name this article "iPhone Named 'Best in the World'"? Or "iPhone: Worst phone, Best hand-held computer"?

Oh right, because you're actually writing an article about today's launch of the Droid phone. And you call Verizon heavy-handed.

I had the iphone and I HATED IT, but the speaker thing is not true at all. That is so pathetic, wow not even true!! If thats true how does everyone talk on it? The battery is horrible. The data and maps and what not all depends on ur location. This just astonishes me on how awful this person lies.

Well I'm not sure what phone this person is talking about but it definitely is not the I-phone. I reccently got the new 3GS and I couldn't be happier. It is the best phone I have ever had and have not had any problems with it so far. I love all the apps and AT&T is the best service I have had yet. We've had both Sprint and Nextel both of which were over priced and had horrible service. As far as I am concerned the I-phone lives up to its reputation and as for being able to hear it no problems here. Perhaps a check to make sure you have the phone right side up will help. You can't hear the speaker very well if its down by your mouth!!

My hubby suprised me with an Iphone for my bday and I was a Sprint user for years. I absolutely love my phone and dont have any issues. All my calls are connected and no drops. All this chatter about the Droid VS Iphone is a media circus to generate sales. Wouldnt trade it for anything. Each new generation of phone only gets better.

I'm on my second iphone. My first one worked great. Then I upgraded and bought a new one. I've had problems with people hearing me on the phone even if I SHOUTED into the microphone. I called Apple yesterday and was told that there was a "batch" of phones that was produced that had problems with the microphone. I googled my problem and found tons of people were having the same problem. It would have been nice if Apple would have done a recall since they were aware of the problem. Oh well. I have shipped it back and hopefully, my new one won't be from that "batch".

Okay, the speaker can be low at times, but no , i have small ear canals and that reporter is talking bs about it. I love my iphone, and the 3gs solved all the older complaints, like mms and a bigger camera.

I got the 3G iPhone right after it came out and love it! Since my entire family has gotten iPhones, my wife, mom, dad, and brother. Love the apps and everything it lets you do. I have had a lot of different cell phones and smart phones and the iPhone is by far the best one I have ever seen. Because i love mine so much a good friend of mine got rid of his and his wifes Blackberrys with Verizon and got the iPhone for them. As far as the having perfect alignment to hear is ABSURD!! I cant wait to see what Apple comes out with next.
