Wal-Mart Takes Aim at Girl Scouts?

Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar? Try Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Apparently, the world's largest retailer is on a mission to expand its Great Value private label, which in the past has imitated brands like Kellogg's Toasted Honey Crunch cereal and "cake batter" ice cream (a big crowd pleaser at Cold Stone Creamery). And recently, it has snatched up the Girl Scouts' Thin Mints and Tagalongs cookies in one fell swoop. No, the real things will not be available at a Wal-Mart near you. Rather, Wal-Mart's private label will tout tasty imitations. Some Girl Scout advocates are outraged. C.V. Harquail, a former "Cookie Mom" for her daughter's troop, called Wal-Mart's strategy "despicable" in her Authentic Organizations blog. After sampling the "beta" cookies at a recent BlogHer conference, Harquail revealed her true feelings about Wal-Mart:
"It's not discriminating against women, strong-arming suppliers, polluting neighborhoods or racing to the bottom of the China Price. No, this time, it's closer to home, and in my case, really close to home. This time ... [Wal-Mart] is knocking off the Girl Scouts."

"Spokeswoman Michelle Tompkins said other manufacturers and marketers have probably come close to the taste or appearance of popular Girl Scout varieties in the past, though none immediately sprang to mind for her."Now, I'll personally admit that in my grade-school years, those Grasshopper cookies that I was so very fond of had a permanent spot in my lunch box. It wasn't because they were any cheaper that the Girl Scouts' Thin Mints; it's just that they were available all year round. But I don't think much has been done to try to pull Kellogg's imitations from shelves…
Arguably, Wal-Mart's revamped Great Value private label has generated high expectations. At the start of 2009, Wal-Mart's private-label penetration was approximately 16 percent, according to Supermarket News. But Citigroup Global Markets predict that penetration could exceed 40 percent over the next three years. And will other retailers follow Wal-Mart's footsteps with their own private labels and a barrage of Thin Mint knock-offs?
Regardless, I still don't believe Girl Scout cookies -- even despite recent measures to cut back on its number of cookies per package without budging its pricing -- will be affected much by Wal-Mart's cookie nudge. I'm optimistic that even if Thin Mint imitations are available at a nearby Wal-Mart, and even though Grasshopper cookies have been stealing shelf space at numerous local grocery stores for so many years, community members won't be deterred. After all, how can they not support the cause when those cheerful Girl Scouts, once a year, come marching to their doors?
Do you think Wal-Mart should sell imitations of Girl Scout cookies? Do you think its offerings will negatively affect the Girl Scouts? Share your opinions here.

This is more than ridiculous! The world is full of imitation products and knock off designs. If you don't choose to purchase them that is your perogative. If you don't mind them, think they are a good substitute, or a good value you are equally able to purchase them. I personally do not buy Girl Scout cookies because I think the price is way over what a 7 0unce offering is worth. I am not anti- Girl Scout and was a Brownie leader for a couple years but I also know that the local troops receive only a small fraction of the enormous profits. The bottom line is buy which products meets your needs and price.Message Edited by sirromer on 08-05-2009 11:40 AM

Come on now. Stop with the drama. People who buy Girl Scout cookies do not buy them because they are a good deal or cheap. Girl Scout cookies are neither of those. If they wanted a cheap, good deal they would never buy from the girl scouts in the first place. My wife buys 2 boxes every year. She will still buy 2 boxes every year even with Wal-Mart selling them. The people who will buy from Wal-Mart and not from girl scouts are the same ones who would not buy from Girl Scouts even before Wal-Mart came into the picture. Stop the drama, this will barely affect the scouts. I have 3 boys in scouts and they sell candy bars and popcorn (for high prices I admit) Should every other store stop selling popcorn and candybars? No... People don't buy the candy and popcorn because they are cheaper. If you don't believe me go door to door and tell them you are selling these items just for yourself and see how many takers you get. Almost none I bet. Let the scouts do it and you will get a lot more takers.

I don't buy GS cookies. Oh I was a cookie mom, & a troop leader & figured out how much money went to the girls.....almost none. Now I just make a donation to the troop selling cookies. Walmart can & will sell what it can & consumers will buy where they can afford to shop.Wed, 05 Aug 2009 15:53:55 GMT | createaiz

Wal-Mart and the government should team up! They are both Greedy, They both roll over anyone who get's in the way, And they are both filled with coruption. I worked for wal-mart for 5 years my wife 15 years and my mother in law around 18 years. They are extremly greedy and have no problem cuttting your throat. Isnt it about time for a Monopoly for wal-mart?? there is no one who can compete with them. That as i recall meens that a monopoly is declared on them and they are cut down to size and its WAY past due!! they want this"we love ppl " image yet they are the worlds leading cause of Sweat shops!

I think its funny how mad we get over knock-off girl scout cookies. And I really don't think Walmart is out to hurt the girl scouts--don't they usually support them by letting them sell their cookies at their front door once a year? Now if Walmart stopped that practice (which is in their right) we might have a case for Walmart trying to take out the girl scouts....lolWed, 05 Aug 2009 16:29:04 GMT | walmartvsscouts

There are far too many things that are worth our time in this world than if walmart is going to sell a cookie that tastes good. I shop at walmart because their prices are unbeatable for the most part and I have to save money on my groceries. I enjoy the great value brand, because it is a great value!!! I wish everyone would stop complaining. Girls scouts will still sell cookies once a year a nd we will all still buy them like always!!!!Wed, 05 Aug 2009 16:33:31 GMT | michellej

Actually as far as where ppl can afford to shop Dont bet on walmart always being that place. In a WM news letter a few years back walmart stated.... They want to get rid of "Low class" customers Hence why they removed the lay a way, When they have fully eliminated the competiton they can raise prices as they please.Wed, 05 Aug 2009 16:37:22 GMT | DrakkarGuy

I was a girl scout many years ago. I believe it takes away the incentive for these young ladies to raise money for their troop and give them a sense of accomplishment. Wal-Mart needs to stay out of this. Poor ole' Sam. He would not be happy the way his business is goingWed, 05 Aug 2009 16:37:36 GMT | tupie

Whats sad is Wal-mart was 68-72 % american goods when sam was alive. When he died his family sold most of the stock to Corupt money hungry corporate types. Id bet anything Sam has rolled over in his grave after what has happened to his once good American business.Wed, 05 Aug 2009 16:43:10 GMT | DrakkarGuy

Walmart at it's best,SCREW ALL. In the past I serviced Walmart as a vendor and was treated as a slave rather than a retail partner. I haven't spent a dime in one in 18 years and never will again.Walmart makes it's money by strong arming there vendors and on the backs of their employees.Wed, 05 Aug 2009 16:54:40 GMT | dolfan13

Those who openly criticize but secretly patronize Wal-Mart should shut their mouths. Wal-Mart can sell their imitations and people can buy or not buy them. The winers can support the Girl Scouts by buying and freezing Girl Scout cookies.Wed, 05 Aug 2009 17:03:27 GMT | CaneWailerman

This is America the land of the free, or at least for now... Walmart is not the evil giant here. We sold over 1000 boxes of cookies last year and most of them outside of Walmart. The people that buy Girl Scout cookies do it to support GS's, 4.00 a box is hardly a good deal. People like to see the smiling GS's pitch and sell; and that is what they are supporting.Wed, 05 Aug 2009 17:05:18 GMT | muddyventures

I would certainly hope that people continue to support girl scouts, we have lots of great cookies and all the money earned goes to girl programs and troops. That being said, I think this may hurt our sales come March- Last year the economy took a big chunk out of our sales, with too many people saying that the cookies are too expensive for too few cookies in a box. My girls don't set the price, but I am sure that Wal-mart will have a better price for more product. And FYI- Wal-mart is the worst place to sell in front of, they won't let you use the bathrooms and they do not let you sit inside during bad weather. One more reason I will not shop at Wal Mart!Wed, 05 Aug 2009 17:05:30 GMT | Kinithia13
