Ian McKellen Admits to Ripping Pages from The Bible

Ian McKellenLegendary British actor Ian McKellen opens up in a revealing interview with Details magazine about the ‘annoyance’ of bearing the title of Sir, hand-holding with “Lord of the Rings” co-star Elijah Wood, and ripping pages out of the bible to make it more gay-friendly.

The soon-to-be 70-year-old explains that the seemingly oh-so-special title of “Sir,” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be for him.

“It's actually more of an annoyance, that title,” he says. “And I don't think I'm a saint.”

When McKellen, who came out of the closet at age 49, was asked if he’s ever wanted to get married, the response was simple.

“It's never crossed my mind that it'd ever be possible for me,” he said.

He doesn’t hesitate to confirm rumors that he tears the pages of Leviticus 18:22 out of copies of The Bible in his hotel rooms either. (The chapter deals with a number of sexual activities that are considered to be abominable, including homosexuality.)

“I do, absolutely. I'm not proudly defacing the book,” he says, “But it's a choice between removing that page and throwing away the whole Bible.”

McKellen has a huge portfolio of acting work, but realizes he’ll most likely be tied to the Gandalf character for the rest of his life. And his after-life for that matter.

“I'm well aware that when I go,” he says, “the London Evening Standard billboard is going to say, ‘Gandalf Dies.’”

That’s something he’s OK with, adding, “And you could say I've missed out on having kids but I've grandfathered so many children through the role.”

One of those who he likely considers family is none other than Elijah Wood — Frodo of the “Lord of the Rings" series.

McKellen reveals he has a tattoo of the number nine, in elvish (there are nine members in “The Fellowship of the Ring”). He doesn’t remember the pain, but recalls Wood by his side, holding his hand the entire time.

“So I have lots of young friends, who fortunately don't treat me as a guru, a person that knows all the answers,” he says. “I'm just one of the gang — trying to get through it, you know?”

Sir Ian is mistaken if by ripping the pages out of GOD'S word he thinks it changes it. GOD'S word is forever settled.
Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

I think, we all have the right to pick and choose our partners. I also feel that some things are meant to be very private including your sex life, if we didn't know someone is gay, it would'nt bother you.
Respect all people!

Well, if he thought about it for a moment, it's not the real Bible any more once you rip pages out of it, any more than "Gone With the Wind" remains the TRUE story if you rip out the "**bleep**" coming from Rhett Butler's mouth.

Bravo, Ian!

I, for one, do throw the whole bible in the garbage -- or out the hotel window if it opens.

I don't care what you or your imaginary friend says. I don't let the supernatural rule my world.

Whwn will we, as gay ppl, learn that you do not earn respect and acceptance by disrespecting others? How childish can you get? So the big bad Christians are mean to us so we tear up their Bible? lol That will show em I guess. Grow up and use your words when you have an issue.

I am not surprised by his thoughts or his actions.
His attitude towards Scripture doesn't change what is in the Bible.

Frankly, I'm very tolerant of folks' sexual persuasion and not very tolerant at all at those who destroy other people's property.

God really says nothing about homosexuality. In fact, the Bible is not the word of God. It is the word of man as he felt God told it to him. Here is my word of God, which God told to me:
I believe that God exists, most definitely. God is spirit, and therefore I do not know if God is able to take on either a male or female persona. Being very talented, God has probably created universes beyond our own. I hope they have turned out smarter and better for
God than we have.
There is no real word of God in this world. It is man's word. I believe is God ever really did speak to us, our tiny hate-filled, war-mongoring heads would probably explode.
God also told me that people like you, who think you are more worthy because you have sex with people of the opposite sex... he finds you to be somewhat of an abomination.
God bless Ian McKellan and the entire world. No exceptions.

I wish they would have comic books in hotel rooms, instead of Bibles. Atleast you would have something decent to read when you take a crap.

i think people are misunderstanding the general tone of his interview, i doubt highly that he actually defaces bible's rather he must have meant that he "cherry picks" what he reads and doesn't read or respects and doesn't respect in the bible itself. he symbolically "rips pages out" like many ppl do metaphorically.

The fact that we have HIS words are proof enough that we matter.. If people ignore the warnings , Their outcome (they know) will be "Their Choice"..

@mophilter: who matters again? your statement sounds rather convoluted; i think it is more a matter of whether or not you personally believe what was written in a book by scribes to be true or not, rather than it's c2500 year existence is proof enough that the contents of the book are valid.

I'm sure if Ian didn't tell that he ripped pages from the bible, no one would know. How many of us really read it when in a hotel room? Gays have every right to be as miserable as straights so I say " have at it!"
