NEW YORK — The New York Giants have traded tight end Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints for the team's second-round and fifth-round draft picks next year, the NFL Network reported on Monday.

Shockey, named four times to the Pro Bowl during his six years with the Giants, broke his left leg late last season and missed New York's postseason run that ended with an upset win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

The fiery Shockey, a first-round draft pick, 14th overall, out of the University of Miami in 2002, caught 57 passes for 619 yards last season and scored three touchdowns.

Shockey, 27, was injured in the Week 15 defeat last season by the Washington Redskins.

The trade is contingent upon Shockey passing a physical exam.

Rookie Kevin Boss from Western Oregon filled in ably for Shockey in New York's unexpected march to the championship.

Boss caught nine passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns during his late-season stint with the Giants.

Shockey, who was tough to tackle after making the catch and developed into a good run blocker, was also quick to show his displeasure, even on the field, if he felt he was not being thrown to enough.

In joining the Saints, Shockey will be reunited with New Orleans head coach Sean Payton, who was the Giants' offensive coordinator during his rookie season in 2002 when the player caught 74 passes for 894 yards -- his NFL career highs.

"Jeremy Shockey was a great competitor and contributor during his years with the Giants," general manager Jerry Reese said in a statement. "We wish him well in New Orleans."

Giants coach Tom Coughlan also saluted the tight end.

"Jeremy is a very talented football player who always played with great enthusiasm and great effort," Coughlin said. "He was excited about playing. Jeremy always enjoyed being a physical football player and a tough football player."
